how much damage will the salt do to my rims… i cant afford winter rims so im stuck with my chrome ones… i can tell the are starint got rust in some spots… do they make a chrome restorer polish were i can clean them up in the winter? i put hot water on them every day to take the salt off but the recent weather isnt helping matters
You should be able to get a set of steelies for $200 or so if you look around, a lot better in the long run than exposing your nice rims to the elements.
in my experiences, once the chrome starts corroding they’re done for. The problem is it will start corroding it from under the plating and eventually start making it peel and bubble. You can probably keep them looking nice for a while though, but pretty sure the damage is already done. Are they pitted?
cover them in grease or something for winter. Works great.
I’ve yet to see a pontiac (or gm product) that doesn’t have corroded rims after just a couple winters. Good luck.
My dad got some cheap chrome infinity wheels for his infinity a few years back, and after the first winter they were trashed. After the second, the chrome is almost all peeling off on the inside of the wheels, but the outside still looks ok to some extent. Theyre on my car now and look like shit.
grease … as in like what?
a water proof marine grease would probably work…
go to junk yard, find steelies. go to auto store and by chrome polish, polish the rim, and if you’re really that worried about them, keep cleaning them with water and soap.
what did you do with the stock rims?
i’m guessing they’re stock pontiac chrome wheels.
My rims on my duramax lasted half of the first winter before the clear started to come off, i have seen chrome escalade rims actualy seporate, yes the inside of the rim totaly seporated and you end up with a perfect chrome ring.
on ebay steel wheels are going anywhere from $22 used to $70 new.
A measly $200 and you won’t have to look like a dumb ass pouring water all over your wheels everyday. Hell, you might even get a greater amount of sleep at night.
You also won’t have to replace the chrome wheels in 3 years because they look like garbage.
getting your wheels rebalanced and having the weights only on the inside helps also as the weight provides a place for corrosion to start on the outer edge of the rim. just my .02
Wheel wax can help but won’t prevent it 100%
Or you could just flat black the stock chome wheels…
this year i forgot when i was driving on the robert moses parkway and hit a pot hole and it destroyed 2 rims and tires… i had to buy a set of rims offline becuase the dealear wanted 700 per rim for the stocks… and i could not find steelies that were 16" for my car and i dont like the look of flat black on a black grand prix. it looks good on foreign tuners but not on a boat such as a grand prix
It will eat through the wheels causing you to spin out of control and die.Was nice knowing you
I’ve seen this happen before, it was crazy:roflpicard:
Are they real chrome? or the high polished alloy or chrometechs?
Chrome…Yuck.
