"Satin" Paint Job

Here’s a question… how do auto painters pull off that “satin” paint job on some cars? To me it looks like black primer with clear coat over it, but I could be wrong. Any insight? Here’s an example:

There is a deadening agent/additive in the clear coat that gives it that effect.

failmax aka sportmax 962 ftl.

please…why are sportmax’s so bad? I would like to know

STFU about Sportmax’s. He asked for help, he doesn’t give a fuck about the wheels.

Hooked, I’m glad you saw through my clever rouse of asking about the paintjob and really wanted opinions on the wheels. No, really… you’re opinion is really important to me and I’m glad I got it… I was actually sitting here while typing it and thinking, “Jeez, I hope Hooked on 240 chimes in about those rims, because HIS opinion is key to my decision on the paintjob!”

Moving on, 94Gt, thank you. I’ve always been curious and may have it done on a future project.

i’m sensing a little hostility !!!:wierd

nope,
its real satin pain… aka semi-gloss. no clear is necessary. you can see my paint on my e36 when i finish it up this summer. have been planning on a satin finish for about 3 years now, and i’m finally getting around to doing it.

Yeah man, it looks really sharp. I definitely want to check yours out when it’s finished so I can get a feel for it. Just picked up my new project yesterday, so I’m ready to get rollin’.

you’ve got it about half done already

i saw two things about this online. one said that you can do whatever color paint and then use the special clearcoat that dries with no shine and another one said u have to use satin paint AND the special clear to get this effect. i cant really confirm or deny either one.

ive seen it done on a GSXR tank. It was slightly shinier than that though. Rattle Can job. Black primer, Black low gloss paint, and then a couple clear coats with no wetsanding or buffing gave it a pretty cool look. Prob what I’m gonna do to my car if I cant afford a real white paint job some time soon. Hit me up dewderz I wanna come see the new car.:bowdown

P.S.-- Welcome to the club… The big penis club.:thumbup

can we rattlecan your car instead, Scott?

i know i know. not the best route to take. But I’m broke and as of saturday, unemployed. there’s spots in my paint where bare metal is showing. It’s in pretty rough shape. And I will eventually sand it all back down and bring it to a guy by the arsenal to have a real paint job. But this unexpected loss of income means that will have to wait.:’(

no i don’t unfortunately… the front fenders are raw primer, just like i bought them. i’ve been so busy i haven’t been able to touch the car. hopefully in a few months i’ll be well in to it.

you can use a clear on a satin, but again it isn’t necessary. the c.c. is a low gloss formula. do not use flat paint, as it gets chalky. the lack of clear makes it easier for simple touch ups. if you want it to be shinier, just use a little wd-40. shines it up quite nicely.

or baby oil like Ed with the big block S10 did before he got it painted

'twas a joke, sir.

WOW :rofl:rofl:rofl

I was just kinding. :lol

Im planning on getting sportmaxxs soon anyways. Just… idk 962’s are everywhere. There a really awsome rim… but in the nissan community there everywhere.

My only intention of posting that was for steve and ron… (91 240, srsbrns) bc they have them. and as of jan i wanted them also.

Paint looks cool though.

Internet sarcasism For the loss. bitches. Everyone just chill.

it’s satin paint, not primer, not an additive to clear. although those are two ways, but the best is to get satin paint, and u can get satin clear. then you can treat it just like any other paint and its a lot easier to take care of instead of a non-cleared satin job which sucks to maintain.

Yeah, I was just messin around. I’m either going to put my Impul RS8 15x7 rims on my car or I’m picking up some Watanabes. I really just wanted to work on my e-sarcasm. Oh, BTW… KustomShop.com has some SICK satin colors. Kinda looking at a flat copper pearl.
