Is it legal for me to sell a rifle to another person without doing any kind of paperwork?
I’ve known people to sell guns at garage sales and what not, like it was a toaster or something. Is this legal?

I would say do the paperwork, serial number with your name on it + murder that you didnt commit could be trouble.
my brother sold his gun to his room mate and they did it through a gun shop.
Make sure they are 18 and not a felon and your good to go.
you do not need any paper work when you do a face to face sale, however if you want to cover your ass just in case. Go to a gun shop and pay to have them do the transfer of the gun. That way a NICS check gets run and you have no worries.

Do a bill of sale like with a car, and if you have any doubts of the person’s criminal record do a transfer like bpipe said.
Seriously, the law is the law. No paperwork is needed for a private sale. Make sure both parties get receipts and if you want to be extra careful, put his NYS driver license number on the receipt. DONE
