Shifter Question

Alrite guys, dont get all up on my back for this question…
I had a civic, and my shift knob was very easy to change it was threaded.
Now that i got my 1st 1990 240sx fastback… I want to put my shifter knob from the civic in the 240…
now i tried unscrewing the stock knob and it didnt work

whats the trick to this one?
and im gonna gonna need a different knob? my knob has 4 different size thread inserts… but i dont think the 240 is threaded anyways…
so how do i get it out!?

thanks in advance :slight_smile:

yes. it is treaded.

you just gotta give it hell.

it’ll come off, there’s no trick to it.

There are many ways to get the stock shift knob off. I’ll list a few:

  1. Use a torch.

  2. Buy a new transmission.

  3. “Just give 'er!” -Adam Jantos

The stock shifter is threaded, so make sure you are turning it counter-clockwise… :slight_smile:

if you don’t care about the stock knob, use vice grips on it.

I’m going to have to agree with dnash on this one. :wink:

Just give 'er dude…

OH Believe me I DID! Im definately gonna go with KOZ’s idea,
VICE GRIPS BABY!!
i just had to check first with you “pros” to make sure im not fuckin it up if i did turn it…

THANKS ALOT!

^^^ doesnt help too much, but mine ended up decent, a few scratches on the base.

haha jantos is the man around around here

trust me he knows how to give’r :wink:

it hurts the next day but god is it ever worth it

BOOOOOO…

SIT DOWN!!!

Back on topic, Brandon did you end up getting it off?

S14

You could grab the “knob”, then hold on to the “rod” hold on tyte (lol) and twist the knob left, and the shifter right. That usually does it for me.

Thanks for the idea… i’ll have the car back this evening,
SHIFT_SR20DET: so my 1990 240 hatch/fast back is neither of s13 or s14?

Your 1990 Fastback is a RPS13.

coooool thanks
and i couldnt get the shifter off with my hands…
ill vice grip it in the morning…
gotta install my system too 8)

1990 = S13

doesn’t matter if it’s a coupe or a fastback.

Coupe

S13 = 88.5 - 91.1 (CA18DE, CA18DET)

PS13 = 91.1 - 93.9 (SR20DE, SR20DET)

Fastback (180sx)

RS13 = 89.3 - 90.12 (CA18DE, CA18DET)

RPS13 = 91.1 - 98.12 (SR20DE, SR20DET)

You say mine is a RPS13

Fastback (180sx) <-- mine is a 240sx

RS13 = 89.3 - 90.12 (CA18DE, CA18DET)

RPS13 = 91.1 - 98.12 (SR20DE, SR20DET) <–mine is a KA24 i believe maybe not…

just went to try and take the shifter out, vice grips didn’t even work man, looks like im royally screwed!!! :evil:
does it mean anything if my shift boot is attached to the bottom of the shift knob?

you have a s13a
