Should I do it ???

This has stirred up just about as much controversy as the whole plane/conveyor thing. We are deliberating it like crazy on my Harley forum.

It’s called going to the “dark side” which means you put a passenger car tire on the back of a motorcycle. Lots of guys do it and lots won’t even think of trying it.

For the record, I’ll have a car tire on the back of my bike shortly. They claim better handling, longer life and cost as factors for doing it.

Here are comparison videos for your viewing pleasure.

Let the opinions begin…

CAR TIRE

BIKE TIRE

it looks like the bike tire is a lot safer

Unfortunately, the car tire has 40 PSI in it. He should be running 30. He’ll get more of a contact patch. I’ve been researching this for weeks.

any pictures of the sidewalls after use? contact patch seems similar in turns.

I voted 1 even though it’s more harsh than I wanted to be. Car tires aren’t designed to contact the road the way bikes lean. It’s placing loads and stress on the tire in ways it was never designed for. Plus, as you can see in the two videos, the bike tire is rounded in such a way that it maintains a consistent contact patch.

Can it be done? Of course, all kinds of stupid shut can be done to a minimum design requirement of, “will it work for this moment in time”. When I was 14 I made a boat trailer out of an old door, two bmx bike rims and a couple railroad spikes I found along the train tracks for axles. It worked fine being towed behind our lawn tractor, but a real boat trailer was a much better alternative.

No pics, but the ones that have been doing it have had no sidewall issues. This has been done for 60 years or so. lol

well shit if you’re gonna use a car tire put like a 305 on there lol

There is an orange triumph rocketIII here in rochester that runs a car tire and has been doing it for several years.

It must work for him, but I gotta say it looks absolutely fucking retarded.

It will look just like this.

seems like handling will be vastly different. it will probably track down a straight line mint, but around a corner, I bet its on/off.

do it and lets see what happens.

edit: its on a harley? dont most of them have fairly flat tires anyways?

I suppose.

I think all Harley owner’s should do this mod.

I think they should also do the no brake fluid weight reduction mod…

Awe…are you trying to hurt my feelings ? lol

Awe…are you trying to hurt my feelings ? lol

Nope.

Darwin will take care of anyone dumb enough not to figure out why this is a retarded idea.

i was originally going to say do the car tire. mainly because youd have so much more stick from a stop and in a straight line.

but after watching the second video, everything just seemed to flow so much better. and due to that, safer.

if you do it, as you said, run a very low pressure, maybe even 25 or so.

Guys, should I do it?

I’m going to mount bicycle tires on my car… lower rotating mass, lower cost, better performance, how can I not win?

I’m not real worried about it. Like I said, it has been done for years and by a lot of riders. I haven’t read anything negative about it from people that actually have tried it.

Edit: Good luck with that Walter. lol

The point is that its not designed for it. You can find plenty of stories on the internet about idiots doing all sorts of things that aren’t a good idea, but hey… you can save $50, probably a great idea.

I say go fot it.

Walter - show me where someone has done it and had issues. I don’t want to hear about theories of why it shouldn’t be done by people that haven’t tried it.

I am going to try it so I can form my own opinion. If it doesn’t work well, I’ll switch it back. If it works for me, that would be great.

The families of people that died because of stupid ideas rarely track down their forum buddies to let them know of their demise.

While joking that you’ll die, that’s obviously not the main issue, why would you want to do this? To save $50? I don’t know, but personally I’m worth a bit more than $50, why even take the risk?

Do you think it looks cool? Because I think it looks retarded.

It won’t handle as well, despite what people claim on the internet. Its like the guy that swears up and down his K&N air filter added 50HP, sure it did buddy.

If you aren’t going to listen to why it is stupid, then why ask?
