I feel the risks are small. The gains in handling and ride comfort is what I am after. I’m sure you haven’t had a lot of seat time on an 800 lb. bagger. It’s a handful sometimes. I am just looking to make that better. I can’t see the harm in trying it. I don’t rip up the streets, I am the guy cruising the speed limit and taking the curves easy. If I had an aggressive riding style, I wouldn’t try it.
It’s just one of those things I want to see for myself.
First the easy stuff. WALTER. Do something about your avatar because for some odd reason it bugs the shit out of me. also stick to topics you have meaningfull input on.
Juiced SS. People have been doing it since the 60’s. Its not a bad idea on a harley or a heavy cruiser that sees light to moderate turns but i wouldnt even contemplate doing this on a sport bike. The sidewalls and tire plies are designed to accomodate totaly different loads and a car tire will actually flex a lot more on a turn then a bike tire would. With that said tire pressure is proably something that would be partially dictated by tire type/construction and rider prefference.
Aesthetically I think it is terrible. The video of the OP, the car tire just doesn’t seem to grip around corners as well as a bike tire…Which may be attributed to the higher psi, as you stated.
This is just further proof that Harley riders don’t like to make turns.
Clearly, the bike will not handle anything like it’s supposed to. When I get a flat spot on an actual motorcycle tire it drives me crazy.
The only other thing wrong with this is what Jay mentioned. When the bike leans, a regular car tire is not designed to put up with that type of stress. I would say if the rider was more spirited, and did more than just straight line cruising the sidewall would start to have issues. Especially if you keep a low tire pressure.
Do I think it’s a stupid idea? No, not really.
Will it work? Absolutely.
Will it last longer? This I don’t know about. It would depend again on the rider’s style. If your only cruising straight and gingerly, sure. If you ride a little faster and harder, I wouldn’t think so.
In the end, I say go for it. You’re not going to hurt yourself and like you said, if you don’t like it, switch back. No biggie.
EDIT - and for the record, that looks very weird to me. lol
Yeah I dunno Butch… Why re-invent the wheel? (pun intended) There has to be a tire out there designed for heavy cruisers that can give you what you’re looking for. It probably wouldn’t hurt to throw the tire on and take a drive down the street for comparison sake either though.
I voted its a harley… dont care, and its not that i dont care but I would only “dark side” a harley… I do a ton of road trips on the BMW, but still wouldnt feel as comfortable on a car tire not worth the saving for me. even on a my uncles gold wing I have pushed it, on a full dresser I would not, and can see the value of running a car tire… so go for it… but till I get old like you, I stick with my bike tire
I know on the VTX forums there are a TON of guys who do the same thing; with nothing bad that I’ve found either except for hard cornering is different. Most of these guys are highway riders who don’t do a lot of turning.
IMO, if you do a lot of highway and cross-state/country riding I see it being acceptable. If you’re one who likes to go cruise the back-hills in the southerntier then I’d shy away from it and get a conventional motorcycle tire.
orange with tribal e graphics? He runs a tire off a corvette I guess. The Rocket III tires are VERY pricey and a PIA to change. So anything to get more miles is a plus.
I seen a few guys do it and have no problems at all. My tire on my panhead is similar to a car tire. When I lean deep into a turn it sucks, but that’s only on a turn right by my house I can learn that deep without hitting a peg lol
If cars can drive on two wheels using car tires, a bike can surely get away with using a car tire.
Car tires can take a lot of abuse. But, I care less about the tire than I do the pipes.
It will be fine. You will not die and i’m sure going straight will just as much fun as it ever was.
From my research, the handling is actually better, braking is amazing and ride quality is awesome. For me cost has nothing to do with it. If a car tire was 2x as expensive, I would still do it to gain the ride quality etc.
When you come back for a visit I’ll let you ride it and try for yourself. As for being unprotected, bring your usual riding attire of flip flops and shorts.
