What do you all think about the north towns companies that told their travel ban affected workers if they weren’t going to make it to work they could either use vacation time or take unpaid days?
I’ve got a couple FB friends complaining about it but to me it just seems fair. The companies aren’t threatening the employees and are completely fine with them staying home, but are simply saying if we’re open and have no travel bans we can’t give you free days off. Orchard Park gets slammed with lake effect and travel bans all the time. Why should a company that chose to be in Amherst pick up the financial burden because some employees chose to live in the heart of the snow belt?
I completely agree with you. My wife’s company is even allowing its employees to go into a negative bank of PTO. However…if a company is located in the ban area and lost business because of the storm then there may be an issue if the company receives disaster assistance. If the company makes its employees use vacation or sick time and then claims the wages paid as lost revenue that would be fraudulent.
My work was closed for 4 days but only gave 2 days worth of time for the storm. People had to use 2 additional days of vacation/sick time or just log unpaid time off. I was a bit surprised at that…
my employer used to give us a charge time to put hours to if we couldn’t make it in or they closed the office early due to weather.
now were expected to make up the time or take pto, even if on salary. if they close the office early due to weather, we are limited to about 2 days of chargable time for the entire year. that time can not be used if we didn’t make it in at all that day though. the total time for the year usually ends up being more then the time allowed, so there’s at least a few days where we have to stay or use pto if they close early.
that being said I didn’t miss any work nor did I leave early when the office closed due to weather last week.
I agree with this. I live in Alden but work in NT. Last Thursday when I came in I immediately put in for vacation time for Tuesday and Wednesday. This morning someone from upper management came up to me and said to change it to excused paid absence since I’m salaried. Obviously not complaining, but I really don’t feel it should be the company’s issue to take the financial burden for me not being able to make it into work.
IMO if you’re hourly and want the pay you should be made/allowed to use vacation time for freak events, whether the company closed or not. If you’re salaried and the company was closed…paying you was a risk the company took when they guaranteed you a lump sum…as I see it.
Oh I didn’t know you made it, sry it’s not really a big deal. I only commented because like a week ago someone I know posted a meme on Instagram like #quoteoftheday#truth#blahblahblah and the meme was spelled wrong.
sorry like I said we’re all human, I wasn’t trying to attack you about it.
