So I decided to change some things on the truck.

haha, im thinking mid summer it will be running.

ok, me too. let the race begin!

picked up a fuel cell, also took the bed back off the s10. tomorrow i will start on the framework for the fuel cell to mount it in but it looks to be a perfect size for where i want to mount it.

looking good. mine is mounted far back, your looks like its in a better spot ’ for getting rear ended wise ’

^^details on that truck?

made some progress on mounting the fuel cell.

sold the ls1. decided that it was going to cost more then it was worth to collect everything else that was needed to make it run. that and i can build a big block with more power that is far easier to swap in to what i have in my truck for less money. so yes, im about to pull the trigger on a big block and build one up. cant argue with cubic inches.

also picked up a complete 6 speed setup last saturday at the swap meet.

plan to locate a motor this week so i can figure out motor mounts this weekend and get it all bolted down, then remove engine to start the build. will have some updated pics soon.

sad panda

Would love to see what big block setup your running that is cheaper and will make more power.

Howbill full 6.0 with harness and computer. Go team

Yea you can get one for around $1000 if you shop and this + a cam kit = over 400rwhp and gas mileage

Don’t want to derail the thread so I was curious what he was getting power output/ball park price.

Big Block hellz yeah. PS, you ever need a second set of hands on anything lemme know, I owe you a favor for sure.

my truck is currently setup for a carbed motor, it was completely rewired as an old school setup. going to a lsx style the wiring for the motor wouldnt be too bad, however i still would have to upgrade the fuel system to flow higher psi, and the 6speed transmission for the lsx is considerably more expensive over the lt1 6 speed. as for 1k for engine + harness, cheapest ive seen is 1400. plus a cam and intake, etc for the lsx, plus h3 oil pan to clear, it ends up being closer to 3k not including the transmission which is going to run around 2k or more for a complete setup. the lt1 transmission i got the complete setup for 1000, its rated for 450ftlbs so its a better 6speed of the lt1 era, and a conversion flywheel is under 400.

as for building a big block, you can get a good running 454 from a 70’s-80’s truck for ~500 bucks. freshen up the bottom end with new pistons for higher compression, you can get a set of 781 heads for couple hundred or less, stick a new cam with fresh valvetrain in, aftermarket manifold, etc and have a brand new motor including carb and distributor for 2k. hell, take out the 781’s and run the stock peanut ports and you can still pump out 440hp and 560ftlbs with over 400ftlbs throughout 1500-5000rpm. theres serveral documented setups that are doing this and are low budget.

those are pretty good numbers for the money especially considering you have a brand new motor instead of one with 80k or more, plus the transmission is cheaper, and i dont have to mess with any of my electrical. it will plug right in and the fueling system is cheaper as well.

Rock on

You didn’t look into carbed 5.3/6.0l setups?

I just remember all the fun choko had with his big block s10 lol

the stuff to convert the new motors over to carb are still pricey, and i would still have to use the more expensive transmission. besides, big block = more cubes. more cubes = more heaterz. lol.

put a deposit on a pair of 454’s last night, picking them up tonight. one is stock, has a bad cam. the other runs and seems to have a bit of work done to it. already has 781 heads on it which is nice. ill use the one with the bad cam for mockup to make motor/trans mounts before selling it while i start the tear down on the running one.

Nice!! Seriously though a 454 with a nice set of heads will roll out on the cheap.

yup. 781’s are one of the best stock heads for these for a street/strip. they flow well and stick a dome piston in there to get compression up. its actually really easy to get 500+ hp and 500+ tq out of these for cheap…which is exactly what im doing haha

anyways, i got my brackets i needed so i could start setting this in and see where i need to clearance. the motor still needs to go back 1.5" to sit where i want it to but it looks like i will be cutting up the firewall for clearance. i also have to move the steering shaft down, it is about 1" away from the head directly infront of the exhaust port. oil pan clearance is pretty good but thats because i had already notched it before. i may modify that a little bit. im definately going to run fenderwell headers for this. i hope to have all the fab work done this week so i can start taking the motor apart and order parts to build it.

sucks the firewall needs notching but this should be awesome when it’s done.

alright, motor is sitting where it needs to be. got bolts in to align everything and measure and set my angles. putting a big block in one of these so it fits the way it should is way more involved then a small block haha

i ended up cutting a decent chunk of the firewall out and the rear of the cylinder head now sits where the gas pedal used to mount, lol. i still need to trim up the firewall a little more where the steering comes through under the brake booster and i need to trim out the firewall above the distributor so theres room to get it out of there when needed. then trim the tunnel/floor a little more for some more clearance. next step is welding in the motor mounts solid and building a transmission crossmember. then ill start the tin work on the firewall to make that look nice.

Motor mounts welded in. Frame front crossmember notched and plated. Transmission crossmember built from scratch done. Also bought a set of drag wheels with runners and hoosiers. Pics and more info later.

hell yeah!!
