So long Tom Golisano? (Sabres sale rumors heating up)

Reports of letter of intent for $150 million sale.

But, Quinn denying it…

Good riddance if it’s true. I appreciate him keeping them in Buffalo and all but spending potential free agent money on politics is not a Cup-winning strategy.

Exactly. WNY owes Tommy thanks for saving the team from bankruptcy but I’m hoping a new owner will put more weight on winning than the bottom line.

This guy just blew 88 million buying his old school a hockey rink and some scholarships, so picking up some players for an NHL team shouldn’t be a big deal.

Would they definitely stay here?

His wife is from WNY.

$150 mill seems cheap for a pro sports team. Is that a reasonable price?

Numbers I saw from Forbes this morning put the Sabres value at $170M, 23rd out of 30 teams.

Edit: found the link.

NHL is a lot cheaper than the other sports. Tom paid 92 million for them in bankruptcy court, of which a bunch of that was debt assumption, so not a bad ROI.

And much of that debt was to the state/county and was forgiven. So Tom will make a ton of money when he sells.

The sabres have also posted losing revenue on 8 of the last 9 years and as of last year, they were only worth 169M according to Forbes but isn’t bad when he only paid 92M.

The guy has a wife from here, has lived here, grew up watching the flyers “broadstreet bullies”, became a sabres fan, spent 88 million on a division 1 team for his old school, and is worth twice what Galisano is. I am all for it!

The NHL has said previously that they have to approve any sale and will not approve one if the team is to be relocated.

Plus, as others have said, this guy has some real WNY ties.

Sounds like it would be a good thing for us.

im all for this

vanek still isnt 7 million dollars good. when is he going to be?
why dosent buffalo have anyone good?

who is this meyers kid, and how is he not still playing pick up hockey 4 nights a week with high school kids?
half the team MUST go before they will get anywhere.

ny has 3 hockey teams that all suck badly. cant we just make one super team ?

Neither really have to do with a new owner. Vanek is a very talented player, it just depends on what night. I’m not sure who Meyers is but Myers is one of the leagues best young defensemen. He logs more ice time than some of the Veterans do throughout the league. He has almost as much ice time as Chara does per game. It’d take a lot for the Sabres to put him back in the minors.

Myers’s struggles are mostly losing his veteran partner that saved his ass when he took chances. He’s coming around. There aren’t many D-men in this league that can make a shot like that OT goal he had at any age.

Quinn denied the $150 million statement but I think he was intentionally vague.

I say

I’m picturing Golisano and this potential owner sitting around some luxury bar working out the deal saying, “fuck Quinn, he’s a minority share owner and can find out once we’ve finalized everything”.
