:picard:
lol. Love that their first response was, “We are aware of it but we cannot do anything about it.” Good old TW. So glad I have Verizon.
i just love their “we’re aware, we cant fix it” attitude.
EDIT: damnit… you beat me to it.
TW is handing out modem/router combos now?
Good thing I have verizon now.
…Fucking Idiots.
My Moto SurfBoard is still running.
I have the new one that’s a combination VOIP phone box too…its actually a lot better than the crap they used to give us
I’ve never seen that SMC router distributed to TW customers around here.
I’ve always been given a old ass motorola modem, until I bought my own RCA modem that says comcast on it, lol.
I didn’t know they gave out wireless routers, fucking bastards, I bought my own.
They don’t give them out, technically you rent them, and as always it is an additional fee.
Also, in Buffalo the SMC’s are rare and when I was there were being forcefully phased out with other models, rofl.
wifi sucks anyways haha
LOL @ OP, would you bitch at toyota because the garmin that was given to you sucks at routing?
Lets see…
SMC makes wifi router that has security problem, lets blame time warner!!! lmfao
OP’s article leaves out quite a bit…
“We were aware of the problem last week and have been working on it since,” said Time Warner spokesman Alex Dudley.
I’m sure when they were notified they said something along the lines of we will refer it to smc, but twc cannot do anything about it, as in twc doesn’t own smc or write code for them.
Time Warner’s Dudley says the SMC8014 modem/routers are just a small portion of the 14 million devices its customers are using. So roughly .5%, big whoop.
I doubt one person on the board has one, as there is only a few in buffalo remaining, most were replaced by now.

^^^ Someone works for TW.
Sherlock.
If a company is going to distribute a product that provides their service they should audit the device…
Your comparison doesn’t make sense…
What if their HD boxes start going bad? Yes someone else makes them however TW supports them and provides service with them this would fall on TW for not doing appropriate testing of a product they back.
yeah man
-
If you are going to represent a product by distributing it to your users, you better test it
-
Most ISPs would prefer to keep their network secure, not the case here
-
“Helllllo Mr. Lawyer…Why no, I did not realize that the product we rented out to your client was the cause of their personal data loss, which resulted in an ID Theft case.”
That modem is 5 years old, I think it very well passed “appropriate testing”
TW was notified of an issue, they forwarded it to SMC, SMC came out with a patch, TW is supplying the patch.
And just for giggles, TW doesn’t supply those in WNY, Adelphia did.
Ok?
I seem to get the impression you think I hate TW…which is not the case a few people are trying to get me to work there…
Yea a easily exploitable vulnerability that can be done remotely doesn’t qualify as “appropriate testing”
TW/Adelphia/Whoever when you deploy a product into someones home which can potentially compromise their internal home network and leave them vulnerable to identify theft/loss of data things you can put a monetary value against its a BIG deal.
wow, jabbu drank even more of the kool aid than that geico broad.
Jabbu what do you do at TW?
