Soft clutch pedal: PPlate? Lines? Slave? Master?

So yea…

Early this year, when I did my clutch, I replaced my clutch slave as well.

I put maybe 3000-5000kms on the car before it crapped out (hence the
SR swap).

I used the same slave in the SR since the slave that came on the SR
tranny had a leaky rubber piece.

I drove the car for maybe 900kms or so and then the clutch pedal finally
started going soft.

I bled the clutch, checked to see if the fluid level had dropped if there was
a leak but the fluid level was pretty much same.

I bled the system several times and it would hold pressure but after a
while it would start to go soft again. Once again the fluid level didn’t really
change.

I tried moving the clutch fork with my hand but it was too stiff.

As well, there is a very subtle rattling sound in the tranny when the clutch
is disengaged. This is obviously the throw out bearing but that doesn’t
really explain my soft clutch.

Anywho, the clutch is getting replaced next spring (with an ACT
HDR6 :noes: ) but I figure I find out if the master or slave is kaput.

Thanks :wavey:

when looking at the slave, pull back the rubber boot to see if its wet (leaking). My pedal was soft, and I wasn’t visably loosing fluid, but my slave was leaking past the shaft seal, but was hidden by the boot. The leak wasn’t much, but it was enough to get air into the system.

I say throw in the old KA slave, and see if that fixes it.

No no, I DID use the KA slave. The one that had like 5000km on it.

I pulled the boot, looked at the seal on the metal pistion but saw no
damage to the rubber seal.

Theere was liquid no/around the piston however.

I will see how it fares with the new clutch next spring.

Could it be my master?

What is it with you and clutches Gautam :?
I’m suffering from the same predicament, my clutch pedal went soft somewhere along the way this summer and I have bran new clutch.

Ussually this is caused by air in the system, if the clutch isn’t slipping I doubt its clutch related. Likely, slave or master.

Bleed the system and see how it feels.

Andrew.

EDIT: I just re-read and see that you did bleed. So when you did this it was ok for a bit then went soft again? Air is getting in somehow if this is the case.

Andrew: It’s a sign that I must go Automatic. :noes:

After I bleed it, I don’t get full pressure, I get maybe some back; enough
to allow me to shift through the gears.

When this happened, I bled it one night and the next morning I took it to
work. Around when I got to work it started to lose its ‘feel’.

When I was coming home that night, it just got softer and softer…
eventually I was a few traffic lights from home and I just couldn’t
put it in gear. Had to pump the clutch and rev/force it into gear.

Somehow air is getting into the system I think; just not sure.

i know this might be dumb to ask , but do you still have the clutch dampener, that little box between the slave cylinder and master cylinder

Nope, removed it when I replaced the clutch on the KA last winter.

Oh and seeing as you are new…feel free to introduce yourself in the
New Members section :wavey:

if you are bleeding the system wrong you could mess up the seals in the master cylinder. The master cylinder is propably leaking internally. that is what happend when i changed my clutch… :stuck_out_tongue:

If no fluid is coming out of the slave, it’s probably the master. If the seal on the master goes, it will just not move the fluid.

It’s not holding pressureand not coming back when you bleed it, so I’m pretty sure it’s the master.

I should probablly invest in another master then?

I do have an ACT heavy duty clutch going in next spring (un-sprung
6-puck :noes: ) so it probally will benefit from a new master? :dunno:

What’s the cost on a new master?

around $25.00…

almost every 240sx has a soft clutch as ive been in a few from friends… do you think its only natural on a stock 240 5 spd setup?
around $25.00…
Really? The slave was like $37 after tax from NAPA.

I hope you’re right and didn’t mixplace the period (making it $250.00 :noes: )

LOL

with GST it was like $26.56 ? i dunno… from NAPA but I do have a wholesale account so list is right around the Slave price. Still not that bad thou.

I think list is $37 something…

Thanks mate, I’ll grab one from Napa. A few bucks is not a big deal.

What’s up with the tranny if the car shakes like crazy when you try to get it going in 1st and shakes again in some other gears? I think toyota said something about a seal being bad somewhere? Or the clutch slave? It also smells bad too. This is my celica btw, 240 is fine. I kinda retired the celica but I’d love to fix it and have it as a beater.

Gonad, J Camel on the board had the same problem. When the clutch was put in the throw out bearing wasn’t greased, also the dust boot had cracked and some gunk had collected inside. After the the above items were fixed, the car ran perfect. Oh and by the way, initially the master and slave cylinder were replaced and the system was bled multiple times, but nothing worked. Good luck!!!

That doesn’t really make any sense. The TOB has nothing to do with clutch feel. If your clutch fork is stiff by hand, but weak by pedal …

Anywho,

Have you driven an unsprung 6-puck clutch before?

IMO one of the 100% most surefire ways to make you hate driving your car.

You’d get about as much clamping force with a double diapraghm pressure plate and a stock clutch disk. That’s a lot of clutch for 300hp max.

If the tranny shakes while in gear, it’s probably the tranny mount. The motor walks around a lot on the crappy stock mounts, so without the tranny mount, the tranny will move a fair bit and make bad noises.

It shakes more in low gears because of torque multiplication.

my tranny does that also… sometimes i’ll be on the hwy doing about 100-120 and the acceleration the tranny would feel shaky and i will downshift and shift back or press and release the clutch a few times and that vibration is gone… i wonder what is making this happen??

I’ve driven a 5.0L Mustang and I had no problem driving that. I know
the ACT will be a bit worse since its unsprung but I’ll get used to it.

I also forgot to put the rubber boot on the fork when I put the tranny
back in (its a bitch to put it in from the outside).

Oh well it was an old TOB, unsurfaced fly and used clutch/pp.
