So I know it seems like there has been a million of these lately but I’m in need of some assistance. I sold my evo in the end of feb for 21k and planned on moving out to Cali march first, however due to some personal reasons I haven’t made it out there but plan to get out there soon enough. Anyways for a car I’m looking for is something along the nice dd kinda thing.
During the past week or so I came up with buying a mk5 rabbit. Found a few semi localish and figured that was the way to go.
Example of a rabbit would be 08 25k miles. Looking at spending around 14k ish
Today went to vw to see what they had. On the lot they have a 2010 golf tdi with 20k miles for 20k
So now I’m deciding if it’s worth spending the extra cash for the tdi
This is where I need help
My wants for a daily is comfortable, reliable, cheap to insure, good on gas, something newish that will give me warranty, something that will not be a vehicle I’d be temper to mod ( as id prob start a side project kinda thing ) and something that I’m not spending all my money on ( I don’t want to have any payment )
Are there other great car ideas I’m missing?
Is it worth buying the tdi over the rabbit?
Should I just buy a rabbit and be an adult and bank some cash?
i say tdi just cause i really really want a mk6 diesel.
not to mention they hold their value that much better than most other cars…so when it comes time to ditch it you wont take a beating
well your technically supposed to do it within 2 weeks of moving, by law. not that its really something they monitor but def something an asshole cop could write a ticket for if he sees he has a CA license or insurance out here. i guess if he keeps everything NY then its ok, but that just makes it really easy to give up if things gets tough and move home.
Well as far as miles I was putting around 10 to 12k on in the 9 months of the year I drove it. And for majority of that time I was working close to home along with school close to home. I’m not sure what my driving style will be like in Cali. Could be a small commute or a lot. Plus I’d also be driving the car out to Cali too. And as far as keeping it I would keep it for along as it was practical for me to do what I want t do with it
And as far as initial cost I’m comparing an 08 rabbit gas motor with an avg mpg of 30 ish for around 14
And a 10 golf diesel motor with an avg mpg of 40 ish for around 20 (highway mpg of a little over 50 which is mostly what I’d assume id be doing in Cali)
So a 6k price difference
However a gas 10 golf (comparing apples to apples) with the same mileage your looking at around 18k for cash
So that’s a 2k price difference
Well I found out due to my health insurance I can’t technically “live” in Cali because it messes with something. And a person such as myself health insurance is pretty important. So regardless id. Have to stay as a ny resident for some time which would result in rocking ny plates and reg and stuff. Also good thing outta that is I could prob keep auto insurance under my dads name which would keep costs down for me. Even if I bought a car in Cali I’d have to register it in ny.
PM Xrunner about keeping the car reg’d in NY and living in San Diego. I can’t remember exactly, but I think he took some shit for it. But maybe that’s because he changed his mailing address to out there when you’re not doing that (what it sounds like.)
I like the new golf tdi, but you will likely only save ~1000 per year on fuel costs with it. A brand new Jetta base model runs $15,999. Maybe it’s not your style on looks, though.
If you’re paying cash, it’s less of an issue, but if you spend more on the car and take a loan, not only are you spending more on the car, but you’re paying more in interest as well. So you would probably be better off, savings-wise, buying a cheaper car.
You need to do some calculations on your own though. Figure out what your average miles driven will be and calculate out how many gallons of fuel will be used with diesel vs gasoline. Then you’ll be able to figure out what you’ll save in fuel costs. Compare that to the prices of the cars, and figure out for your situation, if it will be a worthwhile venture to spend more money on the car so that you can spend less on the fuel.
Nah brah. I had surgery last weeknwhich postponed my move. I’ll be here a little bit longer
I don’t have enough time to grow out my mullet.
It is. Guy at vw said spring time sells the most golfs. A few years back he said during April he sold 11 rabbits himself.
For now Josh, all my everything will be staying with my ny address. If I get any important mail I’ll just have my parents forward it. But I couldn’t remember the last thing I got in the mail besides birthday cards and banknstatements which I get online anyways.
When I did the calculation between fuel economy and price of fuel (87 or diesel) at the time it was on par. The two cars I considered was an EG honda civic (40-45 mpg) and a MKIV golf/jetta (45-55mpg). The difference in fuel price was equal to the difference in fuel economy percentage wise. So the cheaper cost of ownership of the Honda civic won me over. Now the spread on fuel cost is even more. Last I checked diesel was about 50-55 cents more than 87 here in erie county.
Right now on paper of my past years in buffalo I would agree somewhat. However Cali could be a whole diff story. I know it’s a lot of what ifs
Def not hip enough for a hybrid. Nor something I could bring myself to buy. What other vehicle options are out there though? Is there some big picture for cars I’m missing?
Was. And still kinda wanting one. Before I had Cali plans I was deciding between a 335 and an a4. But both cars I would be spending mid 20s or so. Not that I don’t have the cash for it. But just more the question as do I Roy need to spend this much cash on a dd at the age of 21. That’s why I thought rabbit because it was something that fit all of my current wants. Sure not the most luxurious compared to a BMW or an Audi but comfortable and I’d be spending half as much on one as a 335
don’t get a golf… they are good cars, but not in San Diego.
You’ll get there, and realize you’ll want something fun… Go with a 335. TRUST ME. Who cares about fuel cost. The way I see it, you need to pay for fuel anyways you might as well be putting it in something you absolutely love to drive.
