Im about to make a decision- Fios currently offers their triple play package (tv, internet, phone) for 100/ month over two years plus a 300 visa cash card totalling $2100 net. If I order just the internet package it is 60 for the first year followed by 80 for the second year totaling a net $1680. Now, lets throw in an apple tv or Roku 3 for 100 bucks, a HD antenna for 25 bucks, netflix for 10 bucks a month and Im up to $2045 for 2 years of service and I dont even get to watch all the sports I enjoy watching. Am I missing something here or is cutting the cord not all that its cracked up to be???
Look here pal. I had to lose my FIOS package when I moved and I’m shelling out close to $ 180/month for TW with a couple shitty movie channels, a horrible on screen service and acceptable internet service. I’m not sure if you’re complaining or being sarcastic.
Negotiate better? I pay way too much currently but should make the call to drag that expense down.
This is based off the 50/25 internet also… sure I could get the slower internet but I feel it would be inadequate if Im streaming movies/ tv shows through an apple tv or something
I have been without cable for almost a year now, and will continue without since I just don’t have the time for tv. I am however considering changing my internet options. TWC has a standard package for $35/month right now that I think I may go with even though I hate TWC.
You’re deff overpaying for the internet. I think my 50/25 is like $30 a month… I don’t have apple rukus thing but I do have netflix. I’m about to cancle that because my internet provider offered me 105 channels for $25 more a month for 2 years. No additional fees.
Just a btw streaming HD takes like 5-7mb in bandwidth from netflix for example
Yea TWC is much cheaper I believe around here for Internet service. May have to do a little more comparison between them and fios.
I dropped cable and went back. Like you said, by the time you bundle TV+Internet it really isn’t that much to keep TV. I did drop all the DVR and digital boxes though since during the time I went without cable I put HTPC’s in each room. Now I just pay $4 or $5 a month for the FIOS cablecard and plug it into an HDHomerun Prime. Each HTPC can get all the channels, DVR and guide from Windows Media Center and will simply grab one of the 3 tuners the HDHomeRun puts out on my network.
I still don’t use the live TV that much, but it’s nice on a rainy Saturday to be able to flip through the guide and just veg out on some random show. Plus it’s much more reliable for watching the Bills than my attic mounted HD antenna ever was.
Cut FiOS cable and went with the 15/5 package for internet. Bill went from 110 to 71.
I constantly debate doing this but it’s the sports that keep me coming back. I pay $130 for the DVR TW service with the sports package and RR. I could easily live without the majority of the TV we watch between netflix/hulu and torrents. I’m even fine with watching the bill’s at a friends house or something every week. It’s the sabres games that keep me hooked though.
Call them up and tell them you want to pay less. Last time I did that my bill went from $140 to $110. Of course it creeped back up but I have ordered the sports package and they added their ridiculous modem fees since then.
been without cable for a little over a month now and im pretty happy, I stream football games to my tv from my computer and soon I will be streaming nhl games. I download any shows I like to watch and watch them the next day. I also have an HD antenna if I want to watch something on the local channels.
my internet is 15/1 from time warner and the speed is plentiful for watching hd stuff
Ive noticed TWC definitely seems to have more internet options/ cheaper rates as well. I dont know a thing about internet speeds. Im not a gamer or anything- just stream a tv show/ movie every once in awhile.
I just came across a Roku HD for $40, but not really sure that I would use it. I already have a Blu-ray that has a ton of video apps on it that I don’t use. Do they offer anything else that I don’t know about?
I think the savings come from people who don’t actually watch a lot of sports or TV in general. We got rid of Time Warner’s package which was $120/month and now just have their standard internet for $35, plus Netflix for $8. We also had an HD Antenna which we got as a present when we dropped cable. Between these, we have enough to watch, and find ourselves doing more other than watching TV. If you are someone who needs to watch the sports, and need to have your favorite show available when it first airs, then cutting the cord is probably not for you.
I’m a big hockey fan, I’m choosing watching the game a a bar vs. on tv. If you moderate your drinks/food it’s a shitload cheaper.
Usually the 1 year deal package they offer you ends up costing more money over the two year period. If I remember right you can get a flat rate of $65 a month with no contract/special deal for that 50/25 package, for a total of 1560.
Even though directv has a great product i could never justify the cost to keep it if i had to pay for it. I put a very low dolar amount ot tv service. I would definitely not pay what a lot of customers pay for service. I have so little time to myself i would probably have internet and netflix and that is it.
You have a ton of projects and you’ll most likely wont have time to watch TV. Save your money!
I have:
-TW internet (only) 20d/2up = $29.99 + $3.95 (modem lease) mo for the past 4 years.
-Netflix = $8 mo
-Blu-ray rental = $15 mo (some times I don’t even rent, so this money rolls over to the following month)
-HD antenna = one-time $20 (x6)
-Verizon Cell phone with unlimited access (x2) = Free
