I have this problem when its really wet outside…my battery just doesn’t charge…its not the alternator bc if i rev it everything gets full power again…and if i just let it sit running the heat of the motor drys w/e is getting wet and it charges properly again…anyone have any ideas? i cleaned the motor ground and the firewall ground
so what you’re saying is that it only doesn’t charge when it’s wet outside at idle, but only for a few minutes of idling then it starts to charge again?
so if you are driving it’s fine but then stops charging when you stop for a few minutes, then fixes itself. but if you start driving again then stop and start idling it will stop charging?
just kinda hard to understand what you mean, trying to clarify.
if that’s the case i’d probably say the alt belt isn’t tight enough and when it gets wet it slips, but then the heat from slipping dries it and it works again. any belt squeel by chance?
“have this problem when its really wet outside…my battery just doesn’t charge…its not the alternator bc if i rev it everything gets full power again”
That means it is charging, but you might want to check your fuses. I would start at the alternator.
it may be my belt…it has a slight squeal to it…but when it is really wet everything works until i slow down and let it go down to idle then all lights go dim and the antilock light comes on…until i rev the engine and everything goes back to normal…i’m on my 3rd battery in 2 months bc when it happened before i figured it was just the battery…so its not that…i’ll tighten up my belt and possibly get a new one and i’ll see how that works…but it makes perfect sense that the belt may be slipping but i don’t see how it could slip so much as to not give my battery enough charge to start the car
if it’s idling and not charging, then you rev the engine does the squeal get loud, lights stay dim, then it will stop squealing and the lights will come back on bright? if so then it’s your belt being too loose or worn for sure.
no the little squeal it has is barely audible.
Check your alt. fusible link -it’s a 75A unit-gray in color and located in the fuse box near the battery.—replace if the “link” is broken
i think if your alternator stops charging then the battery light come on. at least that happened to me when my tensioner bolt broke. So im guessing that your alternator is charging, but maybe not enough. possibly brushes, or dirty commutator. check the voltage across the alternator when everything dims, then check it while revving it. btw, when your car is running it gets all the power from the alternator, not the battery. what rpm does your car idle at?
can someone send me a pic of what the fusible link looks like…and my batt light has been on since i got the car just always very dim…when i’ve having problems its on full…and my car idles at 750rpm when warmed up…
if the link was broken then it should not work at all.
the batt light will come on when the voltage drops below a certan voltage, I can not remember exactly but I beleve below 11v. I have seen this before and at first could NOT figure it out. I replaced ALL of the wires and presto it was fixed. do a big three and see what happned there. sounds like you have a lot of vehicle gound restance.
The alternator could be starting to fail if it’s giving low voltage at low rpm even though its still working ok at higher rpm.
As for the wet having an effect that’s hard to figure out. I’d check the belts first too.
But definitely I’d suspect your alternator is starting to give up.
