how do i change spark plugs without damaging anything?
what kind of plug should i use?
thanks
Use a stock plug and make sure your engine is not hot. Never pull a plug with a hot egine… warm is ok and cool is best.
Ive pulled plugs right out of a hot engine, and no problem whatsoever.
Don’t forget to gap the plugs. You’d be surprised how many shops don’t even bother with gapping.
I think 240’s require a gap of 1.0 - 1.1 mm. Check yer service manual to be sure.
Use a propper sparkplug socket, and don’t force them if they don’t turn. You break one off and then you got problems!
Same here. What problem is it supposed to cause?
You can strip the threads on the engine (thermal expansion).
^^^^ now that you know…
Yup! Just trying to help.
what kind of plugs r the best?
Anything really, if you’re running a stock setup you can just go to crappy tire and use the little book that says which ones are for your car.
It’s only when you’re pusihing timing/boost/nos etc that it starts to matter.
Now I know someone is going to bring up gap but when you buy the plug that was meant for your car it’s already gapped properly, that’s why they all look identical but are different part numbers.
And I like NGK platinums.
So to change plugs u have to take off the engine top?
Nah, just unplug the wires and you’ll see the spark plug.
Get a sparkplug socket (it’ll hvae either a magnet or rubber inside the socket to hold the sparkplug… magentic is better because the rubber tends to annoyingly come off!!)
Yours is SOHC (based on your pic) so your plugs will be on the drivers side of the motor.
MAKE NOTE OF WHICH WIRE WENT TO WHICH PLUG!!!
You can’t just reconnect whatever to whereever or else the spark won’t happen when it should.
so how many wires are there?
and would it all be located on the driver side of the engine?

i can just pull them out right? i dun really need that tool do i?
You have a 4cyl with one sparkplug per cyl so there will only be 4.
Anyone have an engine bay pic of a SOHC to show him?
You can just pull them off with your hand, if it’s bolted/connected with a clip don’t touch it, you’ve got the wrong wire.
See that ORANGE wire?
It’s from the coil to the distributor (it won’t be orange in yours though…)
Now so those black wires that go over that heat shield toward the engine on the right side of the pic that the orange wire is clipped to?
Those are the spark plug wires.
You just tug them out of the engine and you’ll see the tip of the spark plug down inside.
Don’t worry that the engine bay looks different.
The first pic I found was a KA24E installed in an old Datsun 1200.
You may want to reconsider making this a DIY job. Spark plug removal can get pretty hairy with older cars. Chances are those plugs are old and could be siezed in place.
If you do go through with it, be F**cking gentle! Use a torque wrench if you have one. A stuck ceramic plug easily becomes a broken plug. If it doesn’t turn with moderate force then dont force it! If you bust it off then your DIY job becomes a costly repair.
Carbed KAE… interesting. Twin Mikuni sidedrafts??
