sparkplug exploded...and is stuck....

alright so i was headin down the 990 and my truck went poof and started sounded like a gocart with no power. so i pull off head into a lot and the damn sparkplug f’d itself. the insulated part popped out of the metal base and was danglin there. so i got a plug and i go to get the rest of it out but its stuck in there and its rounded off. how the hell do i get this thing out? and its an aluminum head so its not like i can heat it or anything. tried a smaller socket but it wont fit on there. its a gm 2.2 in a truck. any help is greatly appreciated…

drill and retap/ helicoil

^^are you saying drill through the base of the sparkplug?

how the fk did you round off a sparkplug?
You sure there isnt just debris in between the plug and head preventing you from getting the socket down and around the threads?

drilling should be your LAST option. Bad advice

you could always take the head off and get at it that way…

im gonna bet it was a champion?

try a bolt extractor set, if you dont have one you can borrow mine, they work EXCELLENT on rounded bolts/nuts. pm if u need it.

Jeez, thats not cool.

Extractor sets might help you out. How bad is the thing rounded off, and how does that happen? Get a flashlight out and make sure the thing is cleaned out and your not trying to shove a socket into crap or something.

He typed that he took the head off…I think thats what he typed.:gotme:

You could get those special sockets for stripped bolts. I have a Craftsman set and have used them quiet a few times.

yah i have a set also if you need.

still got that truck?

i think it got rounded from my buddy using a fricken 12pt socket on it instead if a 6pt. the plug was not a champion, its an autolite. and im not pullin the head off this thing its been off twice already. im gonna see if my neighbor has the extractor thing and try that. cold accord, yes i still have the toyota. its just sittin there.

ha…Autolite…NEVER EVER NEVER EVER

pm me what you would want for it. i dont have a lot of money, nor a place to put it, but im so in love with that thing i’d probably try and figure something out

Nothing wrong with them. A certain GP ran an 11.4 on them. Most of the NGK cars here are running like 13-15s. :lolsign:

whaaaa? I dont have any problems with Autolites? I ran 12.6 with them. I’ll admit though, they dont last too long though.

got it out…used one of those easy out things that goes on the inside…now i gotta retap and helicoil the damn thing. as for autolites, i usually dont use them. ive always used ngk. and i think i will continue to.

I have just heard horror stories about Autolite. Even the one guy I know at autozone is ashamed to sell them. But personal experience I have zero with them so I guess I am not the most informed…but if any one of the horror stories is true its not worth the risk.

Eh, my NGK’s work…

Sparkplugs are sparkplugs. You get what you pay for. I’ve used lots of Champions.

If the head is off drill it from the inside and maybe the drill bit will turn it out of there. Try to head the head. Al expands much faster. It doesn’t need to be that hot. Put it in the oven for a few minutes or run hot water from a sink over it. Try to rotate it clockwise by hitting against the side electrode with a chisel. If it breaks off just try hitting the plug with a cape chisel tangent to the hole to make the plug turn.

Worst case you’ll have to drill it. If you can drill it from the inside the bit should unscrew it before you drill all the way through anyway. If you can’t drill from the inside get a LH drill bit and drill from the outside.
