SR REBUILD

i am rebuilding my SR20det blacktop. i wanna know do the main crank bolts have to be changed or can i reuse them. i plan to reuse them i just need to know if that is ok.

you can re-use them as long as they are mint.

COOL THANKS MAN

i believe the fsm has maximum lengths that they must be under in order to re-use them. I know the head bolts have them im not positive but they should. check and be safe. Don’t slack on that stuff dude

and PLASTIGAUGE YOU BEARINGS

And how does one determine that their bolts are mint?

You have to measure bolt stretch to see if they are reusable.

As for checking bearing clearances you can use plastigauge but using a micrometer and dial bore gauges is more accurate and is the recommended method in the FSM.

You can never be too sure of clearances man… as the old saying goes… measure twice, cut once… I know you aren’t cutting but if you measured incorrectly, you will be cutting…

If in doubt, buy new hardware… if you are getting into the engine, you should be replacing bearings and bolts regardless… along with head gasket, water pump, and all other seals and bearings.

nothing has happened to the crank or the journals, and the connecting rods are being replaced with new eagle rods. i got the crank polished and i am putting new bearings. so there won’t be any cutting. all the clearences SHOULD BE FINE but i am plastic gauging just to be sure. i will check the FSM and see about the bolts. hopefully i can reuse them they look fine by eye . but i know that doesn’t mean anything. i will check that. thanks guys

You had the crank polished and you’re now using new con rods, obviously the big side of the rods aren’t going to be the exact size as the stock ones you are replacing so the clearances will not be fine.

they aren’t bigger the journals are the same size as stock. they are made for oem replacement so tell me how are they bigger.

You do realize Nissan measures bearings in ten thousandths of an inch right?
Even the crank journals aren’t the same size from the factory sometimes. Hence the reason they use different size bearings from the factory and not some standard size all across.

thats why you have to measure and plastic gauge before putting it all back together. as long as i have the FSM specs and measure properly thats all i am gonna go buy and i ordered the bearings according to the numbers on my crank shaft and block. we will see how fitment is when everythign is here. it really isn’t that big of a deal

not stretched or bent, threads arent damaged. Like Sasha said check the fsm to see if they have a proper length, then check yours to see if they are stretched. If they are you probably spun a bearing and you would have known if that happened so yours are probably fine to re-use.

That is all I was really trying to say, you should measure them out and make sure you get the right sizes. It just sounded as if you were saying you didn’t need to check the clearances since everything was OEM.
