SR20DET rebuilding shops?

OK well Today I finnaly took my car out and over to the Machanics shop to have a few details fixed, I had him listen to the motor and he says its on its way out. Theres a ticking sound between 2500 and 3500 RPM. Most likly something internaly wrong or along those lines… (the motor was like this when I got it.) So im just wondering if anyone knows of a shop that rebuilds the SR20DET motors and for how much?

Thanks

It depends on how much is involved.

The noise you described could be pretty much anything, if you go into a little more detail, some of the guys here may be able to diagnose the problem a little better.

Is the ticking coming from the head, from the block. From the front, or rear?

Anyway, if you indeed need a rebuild you can contact the guys at www.ajaxengines.com they did mine. They can also source parts for you, (they found me bearings) but it is best to get them yourself because they will be better than OEM and probably cheaper in most cases.

It cost me $800 for:
Acid dipped, then painted
Decked block
Bored
Knifedeged & balanced Crank
Resurfaced flywheel
All bearings

  • $400-$500 for Wiseco forged pistons (depending on how big you want to go) from Flatlander Racing.
They aslo do heads, but I did that myself.

Good luck.

Could be as simple as lifter tick, but then it would happen all the time… not just in that range.

describe the sound you are hearing in more detail. Is a ticking sound or a a heavier knocking type sound or a clunk? Does it happen ALL the time or only when the engine is cold or hot? Does the sound get worse under load or no?

the sound is more of a knocking between the ranges of 2500 and 3500, Only on Accelleration not on the decel, the sound is hard to tell exactly where but from what i can tell it is comming from the front lower area of the motor but i cant be sure, if I listen to the front (near the clutch fan) it sounds like its comming from there but if u listen around the back is also about the same… so im really just guessing… The sound gets quieter when the engine warms up.
Also the car backfires on decel at around the same range
