Stalling at lights, or at stops.

Hey guys, ive been recently having problems with my 95 s14 ka24. It drives fine, but once a while, if im at a light or stop most of the time the car dies. After couple minutes of cranking and giving gas ect it will start, but will do the same thing at the next light. Today the check engine light came on, so i got the ecu out, and checked the code and it was 98. Now im wondering which coolant temp sensor it is because there is two ecu codes for coolant temp sensor. One is 13, and the other is 98.

Also if the coolant temp sensor harness is just being held onto the sensor, by a couple strands in the wire will it cause discrepancies in what the sensor reads?
Im thinking its because it’s reading wrong and telling the ecu that the car is Overheated, and shutting it off.

Please help me fix this problem, because its embarassing pulling up to a lights subs everything going then the car wont go, or start for a while lol.

Maybe it’s your subs that are the problem.

Sounds like an altenator/elecrtrical issue.

fuel pump?

i had a similar problem on my s13 recently, id get ur fuel pump checked and gas lines as well… whens the last time u changed ur fuel filter?

ah i never did just got the car. How would u check the fuel pump?

sorry replace fuel pump…cause my car use to die as well at lights and stops,so i put the car up on da hoist and the return line was leaking cause it was rusted out…

well i guess it is time to replace fuel pump, since the frigen fuel sending unit is out!

if ur return line is leaking why change the pump? just sending unit. anyways just start by checking small things even bad spark plugs could cause the car to shut off at stops. but yeah check all ur fuel lines check plugs make sure ur sure of the problem and dont just start changing parts.

if it happens only when ur subs are on could be a bad battery used to happen to me when i put a system in my old car.

ye… but the thing is right when it turned off the coolant temp sensor, light came one, and considering i had been driving it for like 2-4 hrs i thought it may be related to either the coolant temp sensor, or the fuel pump since the fuel sending unit isnt reading right.

my car did a similar thing. it had a vacuum leak

ur best bet is coolant temp sensor its gone bad and causing ur car to run rich and stall.

Dont stall?

lol Scott, his car’s an autofail

my dads mazda 626 has a similar problem… when coming to a stop the car begins to shudder and then stalls if nothing is done… but if you quickly shift into Neutral it wont stall… rev it a bit and put it back into Drive and its just fine… hes done IACV, TPS, MAF, PCV, intake gasket, distributor, alternator, and nothing has fixed the issue… hes doing a full tuneup (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, filters, the works!) this week but who knows… hes out of ideas… and hes been to like 15 different mechanics! if you figure it out help a brother out!! the car is a 97 Mazda 625 4Cyl 2L autofail aswell!

Randy, does it feel like the car still wants to lunge forward or keep going?

I’d recommend making sure your TPS isn’t sticking first. Since your car is auto, the tranny takes sensor inputs from your TPS, modulator valve (eng vacuum), as well as a governator valve (its inside the tranny).

Some 4.7L motors from Dodge have had similar problems. This is because the TPS sometimes sticks making the PCM thing that the car is still undergoing accelleration/cruising other than idle.

Hope that helps.

Thanks alot to everyone, it was just the coolant sensor acting up since the wire strands in the wire were just barely holding on. I just opened up the connector, and put in some new wires. I just need to solder and heat shrink to make it 100% complete, but its holding up pretty good so far.

To sphinxx, i had EXACTLY the same issue, but after long periods of driving, so i pretty much knew it was something to do with the coolant as it was blazing out side, and i had only the a/c fan on, i removed the clutch.
