Hello everyone… for the past 2 days my car has been struggling with just starting… first i thought it was the battery but it was still powerful … so when i got home … and went out it didn’t start… battery is good … starter solenoid is good … so i tapped the starter and it started… so it’s the sterter… nowww… here’s the problem. how much will it cost me for a new starter, how long will it take me if i do it by myself and how hard is it to pull the starter out and put the new one in? thanks for any input . and if anyone knows about the iaa valve and how 2 reach it, that would help 2 because i don’t like idleing at 500 rpms … shakes scare me thanks
there is a pipe the leads into the airbox, follow it along the strut tower and then you well see it go into the exhaust manifold. that is the AIV. you could also turn up your idle, is the little plastic screw on the intake manifold.
as for the starter i haven’t dealt with one before, i would imagine just raise the car, drain oil. unbolt starter and unplug anywires, it should come out, just do reverse for installation, i dunno though i would have to see it.
my starter cost me 180 installed, it shouldn’t be too hard to replace.
As per the IAA valve, check this out

DRE
Nik why drain the oil.
Its around 100 bux or so from CT with a 5 year warrentee and all you have to do is jack up the car support it with proper jack stands and remove the two starter bolts and stick in the new one and away we go!
adam is right, the starter just goes into the tranny where the flywheel is, theres no engine oil in there… (well there better not be)
thanks alot guyz… i’mma try it this weekend… so i guess i gotta go order a starter now … it’z all good… well yea… thanks again… i’d really like 2 get into modding my 240 but it’s 2 hard to balance school work and my car … and i dont’ have a garage in orillia … only in t.o … thanks again
oh yea i forgot 2 add… how long can i go w/ the tapping of the starter? is it a gamble? because i’ll only have time 2 fix it on sat thanks again guyz
i had this problem last week…
it takes 30 minutes to replace it, just gotta get two bolts off, one you can see and one you cant, when under the car.
be sure to unplug the crap first
ALSOOOOO when i make hard turns … i hear a grinding sound … it isn’t like sheering grinding just a deep grinding it feels like it’s comin from under me because i can feel the floor vibrate a little i guess i gotta check it oout when i change my starter would anyone have info on this?
i dunno, i just assumed there might be oil there because there are gears, whatever like i said, i have never done this.
Nope no oil and the grinding your hearing is probably the starter gear hitting the flywheel.
ohhhhhhhhhhh so when i get a new starter it’ll stop?
most likely… but i dont know why tapping it would help, you are sure your solenoid is good and all the connections are tight right? I have a KA starter lying on my floor in my garage somewhere i think but im in TO…
i thought tapping it meant that that starter solenoid was bad, not the starter.
ditto
Not if ur stuck in barrie and you have no other way of getting home
