Street Racing Felony?

Alright, so I was reading a paper at work today (Getting re-introduced with what was happening in the world) and read that the gov’t wants to make Street Racing a Felony? I didnt believe it, how could it even be considered that? … Suffice to say what are your guys thoughts on this?

Personally: I think its a load of bull… But hey i’m only 19, still have my rebel without a Cause or clue attitude and have known to speed on a regular basis. Have i been caught: yes. Did i pay the price, yes. But seriously what is the grounds for this, to a officer it could be as simple as someone speeding with a car that is moddified, and they could charge said person for street racing. Could this happen, maybe… I’m not the law, i just have to live under it

I know that there has been a rise of incidents (Vette man and the mother last year, 2 mustangs this year, and those are the ones that made the news) and with the Anti-Christ of all car movie coming out today makes you wonder how were going to be screwed because of others…

Yeah I seen this on the news this morning. They’re gonna be beefing up penalties for “street racing” i.e. a felony. I would like to know how they classify it as, or how they can distinguish it from speeding.

I’m 20 and have had many speeding tickets, a few tows and my license suspended for a month while i was living in Yellowknife. It was mainly because of one new By-Law in town trying to make a name for himself. I’ve never had a problem with RCMP whatsoever though. My car was a marked car in Yellowknife, one reason why I moved to Edmonton.

I see this as a lot of bullshit too because as of tonite on, guaranteed, you’re going to see a new generation of ricers roaming about. Little shits that don’t have a clue about what they’re doing are going to be giving people who’ve been racing legit for years a bad name.

I’m heavy into drifting and have been interested in cars before any of the F&F movies came out. I don’t want to see this sport frowned down upon or given a bad name because of a movie. I don’t want to see people who have worked fucken hard and put lots of time building a car for themselves get harrassed by cops just for cruising around. I just hope they’ll be cracking down on the right people.

I don’t want to sound all negative about this, there can be some positive points to this. Hopefully they’ll be able to differentiate ricers to tuners when/if they get pulled over. There will be more media put to drifting events and attendance and interest will rise. Hopefully sanctioned events will become more popular with a positive outcome.

I guess it’s up to us/you guys/me to try and give this type of motorsport a good name eh?

Anyways. . . that’s my .02

My thoughts, Almost exactly.

If the police are acctually willing to give some one a fellony charge for Street racing, this is like at bullshit corner down here in calgary i don’t know if there is a designated place in edmonton that people do it, but if someone where rolls there car into a building or worse kills someone, YES they should get serious jail time.

If i get pulled over cause i have Shop decals on my windows and a big exhaust and modifcations i should not get one because im a tuner, someone that wants to one day have a car that will go to the track and lay down some fast lap times. Im not out tearing it up on the streets trying to race my dad’s camry against my buddies dads TSX.

i think its a good idea, but where is the street racing line drawn?

It’s not a “felony.” You guys watch too much Law and Order and CSI. Felony is an American term. It’s Canadian equivalent is Indictable Offence.

What the Conservative gov’t is proposing is making it a criminal offence, so it’s punishable under the Criminal Code as opposed to the provincial Traffic Safety Act or whatever its called now.

Again, the only concern I have is with the discretion of the officers. What is street racing, and what is stunting, dangerous driving, etc.

i think the line will be drawn at,

big ghey wing + HUGE exhaust and stock wheels = street racer

spoilerless hatch with tastefull exhaust, i don’t have my wheels on yet so stock weels are still fine :stuck_out_tongue: , = tuner

Just saying what the guy on the CTV news said . . .“felony . . .felony. . .felony. . .”

The issue then is how they can prove that the two vehicles were street racing. If the accident occurs without police presence or witnesses, and one or both of the drivers says they were not racing, how can it be proven conclusively?

What I think is really interesting about this is how all these fucking people are complaining about racing now when they did it in the muscle car era and never had a second thought about it. I’ve heard people say “Oh, but the cars now are so much faster than they were then!” Bullshit! You put modern drag slicks on a '70 LS6 454 Chevelle SS and it will run Mid 12’s from the factory. Just because those cars were heavy doesn’t mean they aren’t fast.

Now, if people were smart, they would race in secluded areas where there are no people that will be killed. Of course, that would be assuming that people are smart and care about others. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is tragic when retards are racing cars well beyond their driving skill and the limit of the mechanicals and kill someone, but don’t we have more pressing issues than street racing? I mean, you have gang wars going on all across the country that kill significantly more people than the street racing incidents of late, and yet government funding goes to preventing street racing? We already have laws on the books to punish those who hurt/kill others in races. The fact that they aren’t enforced properly is another issue, but who the fuck is going to get 14 years in jail for street racing anyway? They don’t give sentences like that to those who kill others in crimes of passion, let alone a street race.

Did you know the first ever recorded street race was in about 1895? I remember reading about it somewhere, in Detroit, the very first time two cars were heading in the same direction on a main street, there was a race (they hit about 7 MPH. :D) Still, racing is inevitable…it’s in human nature to try to prove onesself against another. I think we need to focus on the bigger picture. Not that killing people with your car is excusable, but I think there are much more important issues that we could fix before worrying about one or two relatively isolated incidents.

Can i get an “ahmen”??

this is exactly what the cops need to think like. But its easier and more profitable to chse civics with enlarged exhaust then it is to catch people who commit real crimes like rapes and murders.

Does anyone know theres a serial rapist in the NE of calagary? fuck no, all we hear about is that street racing is now a felony

The funny thing is we’ve already got dangerous driving and criminal negligence clauses in the criminal code that can be used to crack down on street racing.

Like my wife pointed out when I mentioned this at home, “But you’re not thinking like a politician.”

Touche.

Dan

Dan, your wife is the smart one. Very well put.

My dad (lawyer) pointed this out to me yesterday: They still have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you were street racing. So, if you haven’t actually BEEN street racing it will be very difficult to prove it. Even if you had some cop on a vendetta it would be his word against yours, which isn’t enough to get a conviction. And let’s be honest, our cars CAN’T be discriminated against much more anyway.

Does anybody know where I can read a draft of this law? I’d like to know exactly how it’s worded.

B-Wurm
