I wouldn’t buy an old anything as a daily. You can get any car and have a stretch of problems if the previous owner didn’t take care of it. By the same token, any car can be reliable.
if they are all such common problems, and you’re so smart, you should have been able to see it coming and gotten something else instead.
its funny. when you ask vw guys what to look out for, they say nothing. once they have you sucked in then they are like “oohhh that? thats a common issue”
i hear/read that a lot now.
edit:
now that i think about it. i bet its a big scam. all the vw guys are soooo nice and always willing to help. like a bunch of canadians or something. they lure you in so they can show just how helpful and nice they are.
 hahahahahahahahaha its just funny ^ Its also funny to see a new VW help post from you everyday. Sounds like the person before you had a higher tolerence for things not being in perfect working order.
ps: the the cars is like 10 years old keep in mind…
Big  to working out all the bugs, I would expect nothing less.
Dunno what you’re talking about, anyone ever asked me about getting an old VW?Audi I’d tell them not to. Anyone asked about a recent-ish I’d tell them about all the normal issues.
Maybe you shouldn’t take advice from retards. Retards own all sorts of cars.
your 02 code is prolly still there from before the old one was replaced. can you be more specific which code it is? if it is an efficiency code you could have a prob with a cat. which i doubt. alos 02’s are finicky, do you know who replaced it, they might not have spliced everything in correctly.
And dinardo, should you really be talking with what you are driving daily these days?
c’mon now, not everything ages as gracefully as a Honda. These cars are like women. They are just attention whores, and it gets worse with age. At least now you don’t have to wait for a turbo to spool to have some semblance of torque.
I would never buy a pre-99 VW for a DD because of their reputation for little BS (like doors not latching in the cold :mamoru: ) always going wrong. I love my MKIV DD though. Those heated leather seats get me to work comfortably every day. I’m addicted to the VR6 growl and how (with a CAI) you can really hear the VGI change the length of the intake mani at ~3800 rpm. It’s not “fast” but it pulls hard enough to be fun. Handles decent for weighing 3k, really comfortable, decent Monsoon system. The damped oh-shit handles are a nice touch. Heated side view mirrors are great when we actually have winter. Plus it’s nice that my DD is one of the safest small cars in crash tests and safety features. I don’t have to worry much about the body rusting since the whole thing was galvanized before it was painted.
I gotta laugh at the Karma jokes but it sounds like the car was neglected, so I’m guessing that after an anal-retentive car owner such as yourself (I think, right?) owns it for a few months and work the bugs out it will probably be pretty reliable.
give it the time dazes has had on the road, in winter, in the buffalo area, WITH JOE DRIVING IT…and who knows, it could be flawless. which is my point, it is hit or miss. the only people who dont have to worry about their cars having problems are lexus/mercedes people. those cars have few and far between for problems, and even if they do they are usually easy to fix.
if you are getting those codes then something is f-ed in the wiring. i am 90% sure of this. if the replacement was performed by a shop i would take it back and have them look at it. or you can throw it on a lift and trace that sensors wires to see if/where the spliced it, or if there is damage/corrosion to the wire/harness. just out of curiosity did you clear the codes after the throttle issue was sorted? i dont think those would eb the codes you would throw if the throttle was causing lean conditions, but you never know. if you replaced the throttle sensor and everything is ok now then cool, but you also might want to try and align it with vag or with your key. did you do either of those with darkstar?
I don’t remember ever seeing one thread from you asking about the passat and any known problems. I could have listed atleast a few of the problems you are currently trying to fix.
You didn’t quote me, but I also never said how great vw’s are. Their performance abilities don’t compare to most asian makes. The biggest mistake I ever made was doing the engine swap and turbo. I do feel that vw’s are less common, and have better interiors. You don’t feel like you are in a tin can. Its an issue of “to each, his own”, and a different style when it comes to vw’s vs. honda, Mitsu, Subaru, etc.
Their reliability also lacks as they age. Wiring on pre '94 cars is horrible and door mechanism’s wear out. If I wanted a car that I could get in, drive for 200,000 with only reliability in mind, I’d buy a civic or a corolla. But there is more to it than that for me.
I think you already are, but if you haven’t been on vwvortex.com searching for answers, you should.
You bought a 10 yr. old car with how many miles on it?, for cheap. You have to expect that there is issues involved.
i didnt replace the sensor, just cleared the codes, and it was fine. i think it was just stuck.
i need to play around with vag-com a little more (learn how it works) and re align it and shit.
jager, there is no doubt that the vw is a billion times more comfortable than the civic could ever have been. thats was what really made me buy it.
im not really all that worried about any of the issues i have had. they are all minor and wear and tear shit. they should all be fixed over the next month or so.
oh, and does anyone have a plug wire tool i can borrow? i ordered one monday, but it hasnt shown up yet.
I had the same problem with my 99 Jetta (MK3) with 60k miles on it. The rear passenger door wouldn’t latch in the cold sometimes. Then it just became sometimes regardless of the temperature, then it just wouldn’t latch, EVER! I had a rope holding it closed (from one door to the other inside) when i traded the car in. You should have seen the dealers face when he looked inside what appeared to be a fairly new and well maintained VW and saw ropes holding it together. This was one small problem of MANY problems large and small i had with my VW over 5+ years of ownership. Because of this car, I will find it very hard to ever buy a VW again. Plain and simple, it was a POS. Not to mention it was slow as balls.
As far as the doors go, sometimes its the mechanisms, sometimes its the connecting rod into door, and sometimes its the plastic washer around the latching pin on the pillar that wears out.
I assume you had a 2.0L with 105hp. Yes, they are slow as balls, what did you expect?
