Stupid Government/Take old cars off the road, Ottawa told

So, they’re trying clunker laws again.

Granted, not too many of you probably own vehicles built before 1987 … but

No big surprise it is new car manufacturers suggesting this legislation.

Maybe if they reined in insurance rates, banks, and pretty much the economy in general, 1 million Ontario residents driving cars 20 years and older wouldn’t need to be driving old cars.

Coming along and telling them they have to get rid of their old cars and buy new ones … isn’t going to just suddenly make them able to afford a new car.

Way to squeeze the poor just a little harder.

Clunker laws are disturbing. Basically, if you have a car that is unlicensed, the gov’t can come along and scrap it, regardless of condition, road worthyness etc.

And people that have older cars that are actually tuned properly and running nicely, will not be excluded.

I’ve also heard from a little birdie at the ministry that import laws are going to change from 15 years to 25 very shortly.

Fun fun

Take old cars off the road, Ottawa told

The most direct way to reduce motor-vehicle emissions would be to get heavily polluting old vehicles off the roads, automakers told a Commons committee looking into the proposed clean air act, yesterday.

The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association called for "new vehicle technology, cleaner fuels, fleet strategies, consumer incentives, and research and development in Canada,’’ and says new vehicles have largely eliminated smog-causing emissions, while a 1987-model vehicle produces more than 37 times as much smog-related emissions as a new one.

That’s a bunch of bullshit.

I used to work for GM Head Office and actually because they are so focused on trucks and SUV’s, which don’t have to abide by emission standards, they actually polute slightly less then in years past.

This is clearly a marketing ploy to sell more GM Rust Heaps to the public.

And Seriously, what Percentage of 1987 Vehicles are on the road today Anyways?

This would have more Credibility if it didn’t come from the Automakers.

**On another note, I miss reading “The CORD”
Oh Waterloo…

its not a bill or anything, just a newspaper article. It would never pass even if it was a bill . Its not too much of a concern anyways because as long as the car meets the emissions standards its good. However they might make the standards tougher.

Just because some “in the pocket of the autobiz” talking head is proposing that it should be done doesn’t mean it will be.
No where does it say that anyone is taking it seriously.

Thank god.

Dont trust anyone:squint:

How will changing the import laws from 15 to 25 years help? Bring an even older car with poorer emission into the country? Way to go Canada!!!

Well, currently domestic auto makers are having a hard time competing with 15 year old japanese imports, so they figure if they change it to 25 year old, they might stand a chance.

i’d like to add to this that NOT only have they changed the e-test laws as of last year. so that every car 1988 and newer must be e-tested until AT LEAST the age of 30, but also they’re kicking around the idea of mandatory yearly e-tests for vehicles over 12 years old.

NOW THATS BULL!

The Cefiro is harder to pass and CLEANER than a Honda civic, yet big dirty diesels get off easy.

My Celica is 24 years old, but it’s got a brand new engine (>300km) and a properly tuned AFM, all emissions control devices, full catted exhaust, and it runs clean.

No, nothing has been done about it yet, but, the Auto Workers pretty much control the government. With Daimler shutting down plants, Ontario will look anywhere to get that money back.

And it’s scary because these laws already exist in some states. We all know how keen the government is to copy cay other failed initiatives.

Driveclean has done nothing. Diesel fumes are a bigger carcinogen than cigarette smoke

Hey, not saying much, but this province has a history of passing bullshit laws.

Just look at the dollars and cents at the end of it.

When someone sells a $1,000 car, the gov’t sees $70. When someone buys a $40,000 car, the gov’t gets $3,000.

Now, if they get a million of those $70 cars off the road, and only 250,000 $3,000 cars take their place, the gov’t will make a hell of a lot more money.

The auto industry will make a lot more money, and re-invest in the province.

Everyone is happy, unless you own an old car.
