Subframes

Hello, im just curious as to what the subframe is, what it does, why someone would want to replace it, and what putting new bushings in does to it.

Thanks.

Just get a car without HICAS, they’re cheaper that way, and when you get it, you can trade your non-hicas subframe for my hicas one. You get to save money, and have the much touted hicas system that turns the behemoth that is the gt-r into a nimble kitten

rear subframe = entire rear suspension.

Bushings will have never been replaced and the nissan bushings (on the entire car) are usually useless after 10+ years and 200k, so bushings will help return the original feel of the car.

they would want to replace it because;

-might as well pull it off if your changing bushings
-paint/powdercoat re-finish it to look perdy
-to replace the Hicas 4 wheel steering
-they can break (I have broken one before, 1990 w/178K)
-…etc

EDIT:go to the FAQ section and download the FSM and flip through the suspension section to reveal all the answers with pictures

that is a subframe, it is under your trunk. your wheels / hubs / drive axles / differential are all bolts to it.

all of your control arms are your struts are also bolted to it.

HICAS subframes use a tie rod instead of a toe arm.

The HICAS rack is also attached to it. removing hicas reduces a bit of weight since you are taking the rack out and many people prefer to use a toe arm instead of a tie rod.

your subframe is not pink… only mine is… because when people suggest stupid things i like to just do them cause its funny but not necessarily beneficial.

So you can cancel HICAS by changing the subframe/removing the rack/makign the uturn with the power steering hoses that goto the back of the car? Are all of these necessary to remove HICAS?

Is HICAS a completely mechanical(fluid) driven process, or is it also electronically controlled, meaning you would ahve to replace/retune your ecu or change something with the wiring harness?

iono anything about the power steering stuff, i never tried to remove hicas because modifying hatchbacks is stupid anyways

Why is that…the frame isnt a rigid and strong perhaps as a coupe?

HICAS is electronically controlled.

and bing is just a hater. hatchbacks and coupes are equal in my books.

^^

your books are wrong.

Coupe
Pro: Lighter, stiffer body

Hatch
Pro: Way more trunk space, actually appealing to look at.

true dat ma homeslice…man that is so true! intergra 240 FTW

You can only be a true DK with a hatchback.

OK, this has gotten slightly off topic…

If HICAS is electronically controlled, and you try to remove it…what would happen?

EDIT: PS-Chris, i cant msg u when it shows your offline, it wont let me…so either msg me or come online!!

theres several different options here

pull the fuse for hicas. it will now use its self locking system to lock the tires straigh. some say its not predicatble it is a 15 year old system

revers the hicas power steering lines take out the hicas steering rack, and get a lock bar, you are now without hicas and everything is fine. it will do nothing with the ecu

the best thing you could possibly do is, buy a non hicas subframe, like s13gg said get it sandblasted and painted, change the bushing, put it into ur car, and you are now 100% without hicas. and you will still just reverse the lines, or get a non hicas steering box

personally ive gone with option 3, is better, you are now without hicas completely, its totally up to you…and just to clarify for you, you dont need to modify your wiring harness or your ecu to do any of this…

good luck with the choice u make

ps if u want a non hicas rear end and ur going to sandblast and paint it, get a flat bed come get my car for $20 bucks!! then u can just take it off when ever u want

Thanks for all the advice…as of now i STILL dont have my 240 :frowning: but I am hoping to purchase one soon, so i really have nothing to do with your car and i dont have room for it either way, Thansk for the offer though.

As of right now, im trying to learn as much as i can to make good decisions later when i start with my car.

Thanks again.

I’d be somewhat interested. Is the subframe in decent condition?

I got a hicas stopper bar. Basically it’s a bar that goes in place instead of the rack. At the two ends there are the tie rods that are fixed and voila. 100$ or so for it maybe cheaper if you find a good deal. Works perfect.

Do you have to remove the HICAS rack for the stopper bar to work…or is it a straight bolton. If its a bolt-on, how much extra weight does it add?

Like he ahmed said, it goes in plans instead of the rack.
You take out rack, put in bar. It’s lighter.

i also installed a 2ws ps pump. Removed all the extra rear lines.

You save weight yes… and have less a mess too. Mine was leaking anyways so I had it removed. I prefer a car with regular steering heh…
