Well Ive been told that the newer Jetta diesels fall apart but this is comming from someone who hate VW.

my wife has an 02 Jetta TDI, had it since it was new, things that need looked @ is the MAF and depending on the mileage and the intake may need to be sucked out, a semi-expensive process but since the diesel in the states is utter crap, the intake gets clogged up with soot, as long as the regular intervals are completed for changing fuel filter, oil, etc. they are tanks

I also have a rabbit diesel with about 180K and it runs like a tank, just slow as balls!!

are you looking to buy new or used?

I have been driving my parents’ '03 TDI Jetta for the past couple weeks. It is a blast to drive around town. The torque is a lot of fun. I’ve gone over 350 miles on the tank and I’m down to the 1/2-way mark. I also like the way that it shifts compared to my MR2 (very direct). They have over 90k miles on it in a little over 3 years averaging right at 48.9 mpg. I can’t remember any work that they have had done on it other than oil changes and a VAG-COM EGR mod (to keep the intake cleaner).

I had considered getting one of my own for a while, but the used prices are insane. If you are looking to save money, you would have to drive for a long time to justify the extra cost over a 1.8T Jetta.

you have to drive a new Jetta TDi 90,000 miles before you start recouping the money difference between it and a comparable gas motor Jetta.
