tdibuddyMPGs thread of awesome.

So find a similar optioned/mileage, same model year Toyota or Honda, look at the price difference and do the math to see how far you need to drive the VW for the increased MPG to make up the difference in purchase price.

this is why i bought it. i dont buy and sell cars like a typical american. i buy and keep, unless its broken and its more to repair than its worth(my old OLD escort). i just found one thats REAL clean so i can enjoy a clean car for years to come.

Cool story Brah!!

Let’s say you get a Civic that gets 30mpg for 2000 less than a diesel getting a generous 55mpg. It would take 40,000 miles to make up the cost with current prices.

I’ve driven my dad’s and mom’s toyotas plenty of times. theyre not bad cars by a LONG shot. my dad’s car is also nice on gas, but its a completely different feel. i pick out cars based on how they feel when i drive them. i was looking at infinity and bmw when i was buying a car ~4 years ago, but my a6 felt nicer to me. also, add in some desire for something different and presto jetta

This. Peeps don’t realize.

Just did a pretty good (IMO) comparison… look up!

didn’t the 1985 crx get like 57mpg?

Did you also figure in the price of gas vs. diesel?

yes I did the price/mile traveled using current 87 octane vs current diesel price

the way i did it was compare the two cars. diesel is like 30 cents more per gallon than 93 for the A6 and nearly 2x the mpg on the jetta. i owe nothing on either car. plus im really enjoying the jetta.

Unfair comparison for various reasons. Need to compare same model year cars of the same class, size, options, etc etc…

oh, but i didnt want to get a toyota/honda/nissan thats THAT recent, plus i wanted to stay in the same family of cars. so, i wasnt as practical as i could have been by bying a 3 cyl geo metro.

You’re not getting it bro. lol.

the wife civic get 39hwy and 32 city with her civic!!!

:lol nah, i know what you mean. youre just talking straight unbiased dollar. my choice was influenced by preference.

year/version/details?

I’ve gotten 31mpg on the highway in my E36 cruising at 75ish.

Usually it’s right around 19mpg with my usual routes. I wouldn’t call it city but I wouldn’t call it highway. Plus I beat on it a whole bunch and that’s taken into consideration at 19mpg.

Only the difference in price matters… none of that

Sure it does, the class/options of each vehicle will alter the price. Need to have everything as similar as possible, except the engine.

haha, find a vehicle with the options you want for $2000 or more less than a similar TDi… done
