Thank God for the roll cage *pics*

scary… i have a bolt in cage…

I have no sympathy for stupid people.
I don’t think it would have helped them if they welded it in. They lacked the common sense to do it. I’m going to assume they lack the skill to do it right.

I’ve always thought bolt ins were a death sentence.
Lol, Cal-Soy… want me to weld that in for ya!? :stuck_out_tongue:

i wonder if it still drives straight lol… " just steer a bit to the left and she’ll straighten out’’

lol the cage went straight through the floor

Well on most of our rusty chassis, welding to a spot won’t really help either, it’ll just tear right through, right?

I’m just speculating here, anyone care to chime in?

Not everyones car is rusted like yours I’am assuming because your mentioning this…

On a different note, the car is still over 3000lbs after stripping weight “everywhere possible” and cheaping out on the cage. That’s a heavy slat before the Jenny Craig diet.

that is friggin’ priceless!

We’ve put two bolt in cages into rally cars that take part in the Targa Rally. Both cars, 2 years apart, crashed and both were a right off. Only reason the drivers and co driver survived was because of the cage.

If its designed and built properly then their is nothing dangerous about it.

My assumption in this case the dude with the Mustang simply drilled the holes through the floor and bolted in his cage instead of welding solid plates to the underside of the floor and then sandwiching the Cage inbetween etc… so the 18-20ga metal the floor is made out of ripped a part.

Okay, well ihad 1/8" steel plates fabbed to sandwich my cage install. If anyone watches the d1 amateur videos there are plenty of roll overs with s13s and 86s, and most of the cages are clearly cusco chromoly bolt ins and you never see those coming out the bottom.

I think this mustang ‘flipped’ over as opposed to ‘rolled’. Think about pillar rigidity, there have been numerous flips at shannonville, and each time whether the car is an s13, s14, or even a lexus the b-pillars and back remained upright (ish).

that had to of sucked big time!!!

What cars have you prepped?

“We’ve put two bolt in cages into rally cars that take part in the Targa Rally.”

Bolt in cages are not legal for Rally Cars. Go to the Rally of Tall pines/blackbear/peirce neige etc. and show me a rally car with a bolt in cage.

I think bolt in is legal, the only matter is the thickness of the piping used. needs to be 2.25" in diameter for most racing series in the states?

at least he should of welded the proper plate to the floor and then the round cage bar to it! would have save the floor at least… stupid people!

bolt in, in rally anyhoo, is certainly NOT legal. I have have seen the rule book for the canadian rally series and WOW. the specs are VERY intense!

I have a friend that competes in the canadian rally champinonship and he laughed at me when i showed him the cage in the skyline. (bolt in)

Which is why he is helping build my new cage giggles

Weld in roll cage or bust, bolt in cage’s are for try hards.

They certainly are legal…

Page 10 of the Targra Newfoundland Rally Rules & Regulations clearly states (5.2.4 Bolt in Safety Cages may be accepted provided that they meet the requirements stated)

Ahh, thats cool. but i was referring to Canadian association or rally sport(C.A.R.S) rulebook.

“Each mounting foot must be attached by at least three bolts on a steel reinforcement plate at
least 3 mm thick and of at least 120 cm2 area which is WELDED to the bodyshell. Examples are
shown in drawings 253-18 to 253-24. This does not necessarily apply to backstays (see
2.c.vii).”

and 99% of the cars that i had a pleasure of looking at have OVER sized plates sandwich-welded to the body. In turn welded to the tube.

So while you may see rally cars built to (C.A.R.S) in targa. you won’t see Targa vehicles in a C.A.R.S. rally series.

Man, that’s pretty intense @_@.

I was always afraid of a rollover in my 240, and I’m a pretty tall guy so I don’t have a lot of room to play if my roof gets squished in. In most sporty cars, my head hits the roof, or only has a half inch of clearance at best. I guess you don’t just need a rollcage, but a pretty good one =/.
