I was driving the car back from Sp, and when under high boost the turbo just stopped spinning.
no More boost at all, the car is running ok with out the Turbo but is quite slow.
I bought one from Autodream A T28 I have been told it’s an easy swap.
Has anyone done this Before? An special things i need to know before i set out on the swap. I have worked on cars lot’s however i have never done a turbo swap.
from the looks of it there is just the pipeing to remove, Undo 4 bolts on the turbo and 4 on the downpipe, remove oil lines and coolent lines.
SHould I change anything else while im at it? Oil LInes??
Thanks
Dal
aftermarket lines are a must to make it much easier.
and s14 or s15 T28 ?
either way, do you still have your A/C in ? If yes, with a s15 T28, the actuator might be a bitch and get blocked by the A/C pipe. Happened to me during my swap but I also used an aftermarket turbo manifold which did relocate the turbo just a little. It might not be a problem with stock turbo manifold, just letting you know.
oh and , this is a discussion topic but, most of the japper cars just plugs the coolant line and not run it to the turbo at all.
have fun getting at the 4 bolts on the turbo chief! after hundereds of turbo swaps the fastest way is to remove the whole manifold with turbo still attatched…it is much easier to get the manifold bolts off…you will need to clock the t28 turbo so that the oil drain line points directly down…you will need to bend and reshape the stock lines to fit up good! you will need to make a new hot pipe…a new intake pipe…a new oil drain hose…and you may need to cut the motor mount so it can clear the compressor housing if you have an aftermarket manifold! you will notice this turbo is more sluggish in the lower RPMS but once you hit around 4000 it will keep pulling till redline unlike the stock turbo! enjoy your turbo swap experience
when you are putting it on get yourself some lock washers high temp lock tight and tighten the shit out of the 4 bolts that go from turbo to manifold, also it would be a good idea to get the little gasket that goes in between the turbo and mani, for 25 bux its better to do it while the turbo is off than to have to pull it all off again if it decides to go in the near future. you might want to get a new exhaust mani gasket if you are not carefull you will break the old one taking it off…
its a breezz if you have the right tools! but if you dont have the right stuff you will find your self “making it work” if you know waht i mean and that can lead to problems!
Instead of only lock washers, use red locktite, lockwashers, and hit the nuts with a hammer to ovalize them. Then that sumbitch wont go anywhere, i did that to all of my exhaust bolts etc. I had had enough of mine and other peoples exhaust coming lose and falling off (allens turbo pretty much fell off coming home from montana one time). And yes i can still get the nuts loose if i want to.
dont tighten up the turbo to exhause mani like a bitch, you will break them! Just snug them up and use the little tab thing and bend the tabs to the nut. They never come off if you have this. The 5 bolts on the dunp use the red lock threader and tighten them up good but dont break them. Both gaskets are a must. Ive gone through duzzons of them. The dunp gasket will be fine. Never eaten one of those before but I have had a turbo fall opff the mani for not having the bendie tab thinks for the nuts. No matter how tight you have those 4 nuts they will come off without it and your turbo will eat gasket and there is a possible seize.
ALSO what are you doing with your old turbo? Did the wheel snap off or did it seize? I will buy it off you! let me know whats wrong with it.
I got the Turbo today. in great shape, cleaned and read to install.
i Call and ordered all the gaskets and new studs and picked them up to day.
I plan on removing the mani from the block. then removing the down pipe and work on the turbo on the bench. i have almost every tool i could ever need in the shop. red lock tight sounds like a must and i will get some in the morning. should i get need bolts or just the old with the new studs? What size of bolt are they?
i did not get the lock things when i got the turbo, however i do belive they are still with the old one. i hope i can save them. I am going to be getting a little help on this project. i have been asked to bring the car to cal for DTP. so i think i am going to work something out an maybe ship the car down just for the show. i was thinking about going this is just a better rason.
thanks so much guys. your so much help i think i have a great idea of what i am up aginst!
You may as well get new bolts too. Definately wouldn’t hurt, and I’d trust them more than 15 year old bolts that may be stripped or stretched or whatever.
autodream and I are having a little disagreement, i called and bought a turbo on Tuesday of last week when i spoke to jeff at autodream we talked about a t28 turbo, we had a entire conversation about the mounting of the different turbo, he told me he had just removed the turbo for a s14.i made a post shortly there after on N-E-C-C-, http://www.n-e-c-c.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5960
I asked him to send my shipment by greyhound, Jeff set it greyhounds. the turbo arrived 1.5 days later then it would have by greyhound. I am at the show DTP in cal this weekend. the turbo arrived with no paper work what so ever.
at DTP i went to the autodream car to look at the s14 with the rb26 and ask why jeff had sent the turbo via greyhound. i asked about the T28 and they said they sent me a t25http://www.n-e-c-c.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5960. win had agreed that they had sent a t25, and said he had seen an invoice that said a t28. Win jef and i talked about the gtr turbo they said they felt bad about the mix up and jeff would call me Monday to figure it out.
at the morning Via grayhound. i have a witness. and he said he would call me on Monday if there was any problems.
Today i called because i had heard nothing from them in 2 days. I spoke with Win and he had said that they did not believe they messed up. that i was trying to scam them for a better turbo, i got a little upset. i not trying to make a fuss, i just need a t28 turbo, i would just like the one i bought i the first place a S14 t28. if they don’t have one that’s OK but i still need a turbo and its was not my mess up. i can buy a t25 in town for $150.00. This is all holding the car up for the DTP in Vancouver in 2 weeks.
Dallas, you are one calm man.
If they fuked me like that I’d be PISSED!
I was at the show with you, I remember the conversation, and to hear that their holding you up AGAIN, I’d be on my way down there.
I know there’s not a fukin chance I’d ever deal with Auto Dreams knowing how they deal with their own fuk ups.
Props for the self control man, Sorry I don’t have the same.
I wishe they’d get the freakin turbo here so we can get it in there already. It’s kinda ghey having your car stuck in the garage with a big freakin hole where there should be a T28 already.
It’s not even my car and it pisses me off.
</rant>
Anyhow, once we have that shit in, we gotta get it over to my garage so I can get that subfloor done.
one more small point i think both Win and Jeff have over looked, i i payed 300 for a t28
i have been looking around and your normal price for that turbo is 200. why would i spend 100 more on a stock turbo.
When i first spoke to jeff on last tuesday he had said he did not have a t28 in stock, but said he would go have a look. he returned to the phone and said he had found one. on an s14 Sr20 T28.
I think he might have been confused about the turbos.
this is not my mess up i can buy a t25 for 150-200 all day long, why would i give you an extra 100. it make 0 sence.
also what happened to the customer is always right! calling me a lier is just not vary nice at all.i have done everything requred from a customer, i payed on the spot, requested cheap grayjhound shipping.
I trucked my car all the way to Calgary for DTP because the turbo was sent by UPS which took 1.5 days longer then Grayhound.
