Just buy a dirt cheap POS '95 or older hardbody, put the vin tags on the '97 and register it with the older title.

how does one go about this anyways? I have a waverunner that I rebuilt and in doing so lost the registration that the original owner gave me. I have the bill of sale but NY wont let me register it w/out the registration. I wanted to look into what VT would require.
Does this also work with trailers? My dad is looking to register his boat trailer out of state so he doesn’t have to pay NY for the new plates, reregistration and inspections.
Trailer registration is only $10 per year here in NY, atleast thats all I pay for mine.
Ive never gotten it inspected. Theres no point in doing it because the sticker doesnt go on the trailer itself and nobody ever checks for inspections on trailers. If for some unlikely reason I get stopped for it Ill just say I left the sticker in my other car. $15 NYS DMV is not getting from me.
VIN swapping is a big deal and comes with huge fines and jail time = not worth it…
If you do it right you wont get caught.
