In my experience the only way to get the best price is to go to the dealer.
When I worked at Fuccillo people would email asking for best price all the time, we would send them the price on the window because we knew they were just being lazy.
But If someone came in with a email from another dealer we would beat it every time
i guarantee if you send them window sticker they WONT buy a car from you
we have a policy and of course it depends on the time of the month for the price you get, last week of the month and i guarantee the best deal on that vehicle compared to earlier in the month
our internet department is responsible for getting in 40% of our sold cars last i checked, THATS HUGE!
Interesting no one mentioned aftermarket products sold by the F&I dept. Extended warranties rust protection tire and wheel coverage etc. are all sold at a premium. You can get killed on those just as much as the selling price or your trade.
There’s gotta be a huge margin on them though…I got GMPP quotes from 3 local dealers that were all pretty similar and ended up finding a place online that beat them by nearly $1000 on the same warranty.
Some places, yes. Some places, no. It just depends. If you bought it out of the region there is a pretty good probability that it’s because they pay a lot less for the coverage than NE dealers. Extended coverage costs a TON more in the NE than anywhere else in the States. Our temp swings of -10 to 110 throughout the year and the harshness of winters and the cold hot expansion of parts is a major reason.
A powertrain doesn’t cover crap. Internal lubricated parts, hell even Chryslers don’t have issues with that stuff for atleast 200k miles. No sensors, computers, actuators, A/C, etc. etc.
I didn’t say that they weren’t a money maker. :dunno: Some dealers make thousands, some dealers make $200. Extended warranty companies make profits off of them, sure…they make money off what the charge the dealer for them. Most warranty companies don’t stay in business, that’s why it’s important to buy a factory backed warranty through GMPP or Toyota or Ford etc. etc.

Meh, on a new car and new Toyota 7/100 will cost a dealer about $1000. Anything above that is markup. On a warranty for a GM/Dodge/Chrysler product with 50,000 miles on it, to provide bumper to bumper coverage, you’re probably looking at a cost of anywhere from $1,500 to $1,800. On something like a 3 year old Benz with 50k, you’re looking at ~$3000 COST.
If you had a Land Rover with 50,000 miles on it, my COST for a 3/36 bumper to bumper is $6,666.
Extended warranties are a way for poor people to roll maintenance into their car payments, 8 times out of 10 getting ripped off because nothing close to the total cost of the warranty goes wrong with the car while it’s covered. They’re scared enough of that possible 3-4k major repair because they live check to check that they’re willing to just pay $xx more each month so they don’t have to worry about it. Add it up as one of the many bad financial decisions that keep poor people poor.
If you owned a new car for 6 years. Would you rather be covered for the first 3 years or the last 3? Obviously the last three.
Would you buy a new car without a 3yr/36k warranty? Of course not.
So why wouldn’t you buy another 3 years for $700?
Also, for $15/month would you cover all my automotive repairs for 6 years? Hell no you wouldn’t. Obviously the rich don’t buy extended warranties. However, for $700, you’re just being frugal. I had $4,000 worth of issues on my Highlander just after the 36,000 mark. Am I glad I spent the $790 and it was covered? Hell yes. It has NOTHING to do with making a bad decision. I certainly don’t live paycheck to paycheck but for $1,000 if I never have to worry about a repair every again and I can just say “fuck it, fix it” when my transmission starts slipping or my AC blows warm, it’s worth it. If NOTHING goes wrong in 6 years, you know what? Who cares…it was $1,000 over the course of 5 years. I spend more on more stupid shit. It’s the same reason I give a guy $25/week to mow my lawn…it’s not fucking worth it to do it myself…I pay $100 a month and it’s handled. I don’t have to go to the gas station and get gas, I don’t have to shit up a pair of shoes, I don’t have to worry about it breaking etc etc.
Jays I think you don’t understand the benefits of an extended service contract. While beck might be more inclined to push the products ( it is his job) I think service contracts are great, are you the same kind of guy who says gap insurance is stupid?

Aftermarket warranties can definitely be worth it, but most people don’t know (as is the point of this thread) that the dealership can mark the product up pretty much as much as they want. It’s up to you to determine if you’re going to need it.
I know someone who sold a warranty with a boat refinance for $5,000… his cost was about $600, lol.
