Things to do in Detroit?

So this weekend a bunch of us are going to the Woodward Dream cruise and I’m wondering what else we should make a point to see / do?

I’m thinking there will be some awesome old buildings for pictures.

Is there anyplace that we should definitely go to eat?

And I really want to find this gas station:

Pegasus Taverna is fantastic. It’s in downtown along a cool strip of restaurants and shops next to a casino. Lots to do around there. Definitely try the lemon chicken soup and the flaming cheese.

In Ann Arbor, check out Zingerman’s deli. Yes, it’s a $10+ sandwich. Yes, it’s worth it at least once.

The Detroit Institute of Art is fantastic, but not much of a hangout if you’re with a group of broskis.

Things not to do.

  1. Get shot.

You guys going through canada or u.s?

With just a few days during Woodward, honestly there will be so much going on between 696 and just past 14 mile on Woodward that you shouldn’t really need any plans other than that. Traffic will SUCK…but if you are looking for something, there’s the Henry Ford Museum a short drive away in Dearborn: http://www.thehenryford.org/

Woodward Ave. Brewery is somewhat overrated, but still can be a worthwhile spot to grab some beer and lunch: http://thewabsite.com/

696, traffic rips at a nice 80mph clip…that’s always a fun road to play on.

*Side note…anytime you are at a red light on Woodward be ready for some action. During the day it will be packed with the cruise, but later at night you’ll see why it got it’s reputation for being the origins of street racing. When I was there a few years back I think I had more 0-80 runs in one night than I had in total over the previous 5 years.

The Ford museum is supposed to be amazing too. I haven’t been there yet.

Pretty sure the favored past time is drive by shootings, so maybe give that a “shot”?

Find this car while you are there. 72 GTO. I sold it to a guy in 1997 that lived in Detroit. He worked at Ford. Tell him to find me… lol

I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot of GTOs there

SLOWS!

There are many middle eastern restaurants. They are excellent. I recommend that. durka durka

Slow’s BBQ will be packed with a 2 hr minimim wait I am sure. We got reservations 6 weeks ago for some guest coming in town for Friday night.

Old train station is right next to Slow’s for pictures:

Greektown is a cool area with the casino and a lot of cool places to eat. MGM is a better casino but Greektown has a lot more around it.

HockeyTown Cafe or Cheli’s Chili Bar are around the stadiums and a good time for sports fans.

Belle Isle Park can have some cool pictures. They used to run the Indy cars on “the track” there.

Royal Oak has decent night life and food.
Let me know if you got any questions.

place looks AWESOME! can it be entered in any way? or is it fenced and sealed off?

Mongolian BBQ was my fav place to eat when I lived in Detriot, its in Royal Oak.

Mongolian BBQ is solid. The unlimited bowls can hurt ya quickly.

Yeah the station can be entered. But I have heard enough stories to know I should keep my distance (ie. drugs, murder, rape, etc).

Weirdest story I have head is the basement is flooded and a crazy guy has a boat and rows around the place.

Edit if you are into getting into old run down stuff, detroit is where it is at:
Hotels, theaters and more plants than you can imagine

If you are looking for something you will never see anywhere else: Heidelberg Project
The guy has taken a block of run down houses and created “art”

Or you can do the safe thing and do a google street view self tour…

You’re not kidding about that. The History Channel had a fascinating series called “Life After People” which showed what would happen to our modern world if tomorrow all the humans were gone. They featured Detroit heavily and used many of it’s run down factories and buildings as examples.

And proof that there is an app for that…

Join a mosque???
jus sayin, Detroit has the largest muslim population in the US
I grew up on wing lake in west bloomfield right arond the corner from where Jimmy Hoffa was nabbed

Eh, I thought Detroit was just as trashy if not more trashy than Buffalo, I can’t even recommend you any places cuz it sucked so bad.

Cheetahs across the river, the shower and the pole is a great attraction

Lots of good things mentioned already:

Henry Ford Museum is very cool, it’s not completely about cars. If you like history and specifically American history you can’t miss it.
Royal Oak is a cool city with nice restaurants and bars in its downtown area. It’s been 5 years since I’ve lived there, so can’t remember any specific names anymore.
Bailey’s in Dearborn right on Michigan Ave, has a lot of beers on tap, tons of TV’s, full restaurant and lots of pool tables if you’re into pool while drinking microbrews and watching sports. I used to hang out there a lot.

Sounds like the Philidelphia Magic Gardens
