Hmmm. I use several different types of sound testing at work for our adjusters. I do have a portable unit, but getting it out of the plant for personal use might prove difficult.
One thing I might add to this, is video to prove that you do not have a leak anywhere. For this, an ultrasonic tester can be used. Ultrasonic measurement can detect air flow where the human ear cannot. I use a portable ultrasonic test weekly to test machinery for air leaks.
I’ll see what I can do on the Db test. These are quite common little units. I’m sure there are others on this board that work for automotive suppliers or similar which require sound quality evaluation?
i got a loud muffler ticket before, and when i took it to court, it got dropped. the crown was really cool, for once, i dunno, i must have had a horseshoe up my ass or something.
I didn’t have a lawyer, adn i also had a speeding ticket and no seat belt ticket.
shoot, sorry, i have to correct myself. the crown asked what do i want to do, i told him i cant afford any more points, so he stuck me with the loud muffler ticket but i got the other 2 dropped (total of 5 demerit points). i paid the $80 for a loud muffler and gave thanks i didnt lose any more points.
I got the same thing with my blitz Nur Spec and yes you can’t really fight the “Improper muffler” ticket. All I did was set a first attendance date with the prosecutor. I faked a receipt showing that I changed it back to OEM and I got off the hook, easy as pie
Buy some cheap part from nissan and just type out “OEM 91’ 240sx Muffler” in place of w/e it was that you bought and make up a new price…photocopy it and bam…i did it with report cards, parents signitures and i do it every year for CPR training instead of taking the expensive course.
Oh mann I used to live in Hotlanta before I moved back to Canada and let me tell you I think every cop in Atlanta knew me because I would get pulled over at least 3-4 times a day! For my exhaust, for being lowered to much, for having street racing stickers on my car I would think they would have better things to do guess not… fucking pigs!
Faking a receipt will also work wonders. I did that the first time I got a ticket like that. Just went to a ocal exhaust shop, told him my situation, got him a 6-pack of Corona, and done.
As for CPR…If I ever need it, enzo, please, STAY AWAY!
This also happen to me with my 1st S14. I was at a stop light and the fucking pig decided to make a U-Turn after I went through to pull me over. 2 of my rear brake lights weren’t working and he didn’t even say anything about that. He goes “you know your exhaust system is too loud” and I said so are “Harley Davidson” exhaust systems…He proceeds to get upset with me and said why did you change your muffler to a “Racing exhaust system” as he called it…I told him that my original exhaust system needed to be replaced and I decided to replace my cat also…He gives me the ticket anyways and I tell him “Well at least with my loud exhaust I won’t get rear ended, because you might have noticed by my rear brake lights are out”…He frowned and went back to his cruiser…
I got to court for the ticket and the judge says to me, why have I changed my exhaust system? I tell him the same story I told the cop and showed him pictures of my exhaust system installed on my car (I took pictures of my complete exhaust system showing the cat and the resonator on the hoist when it was built). I provided a copy of my current e-test (passed with flying colours) and also got a “exhaust” letter from Vibrant Performance (using Vibrant mandrel bend piping & cat, with Apex N1 Universal Muffler)…and I say how can my exhaust system be improper if I’ve done everything by the book…Then I proceed to tell the judge how my brake lights were out and I told the officer about this and he didn’t even warn me about that…The judge asked the officer if it was true and he said “Yes”…The judge got friggin pissed and said that "officers need to stop picking on these guys with mufflers and wasting the courts time with improper muffler tickets…!!! Ticket got thrown out and the officer was pissed…Oh well
Moral of the story fight the ticket as best you can and make sure you come to court prepared…dress half decent…and be all polite and shit…trust me most times it works…
shops do not always provide you with a fake receipt. And if you happen to get one, make sure it has a GST number to show that it’s “legit”. All the other posts regarding fighting the ticket, it’s mostly bullshit. Don’t even attempt to try those cause you’re not 100% gauarantee that you’ll get left off ESPECIALLY citing the California Air Regulations Board (We live in Toronto, not Cali, so that angle is useless because each city let alone country has its law and obviously they’re not interchangable .The judge doesn’t care what CARB is regulating)
The improper muffler ticket is somewhat of a grey area because it does not state the exact decible level at which you can get a ticket for, meaning it’s AT THE POLICE OFFERICER’S DISCRETION. The plus to this is that if you do decide to fight it, your chances are pretty high but no 100%. It’s still better than doing out what others are saying. It worked for them but that doesn’t mean it’ll definitely work for you
and for you information, you don’t ALWAYS have to set a court date, requesting a first attendance with the prosecutor is good enough if you decide to fake a receipt. Just be prepared to explain to them why you spent like $500 replacing the loud exhaust back to OEM.
i should do that… i just got an “improper exhaust” yesteday… funny thing was that i was on a stop when the cop pulled behind me. i knew i gonna get pulled over… lights went green and so i went, then he flipped them cherries… so i pulled over then . blab la bla licence,registration, insurance crap. then he asked me to step outside and stand beside his cruiser and he’s like " iwant you to listen to this" then he revs his engine … after that he asked me to rev my car (stock sr20. 3" from DP - cat- MR catback)
then asked me whats the difference in sound and i told him mine sound better hehehe… anyways he then gave me an “improper exhaust” ticket but then he told to fight it in court… i’ll try to request a first attendance with the prosecutor and see what happens… for now i’ll put my silencer on just in case… i hope my mechanic still has my stock catback in his shop .
this is so weird I’ve never even heard of these tix before this forum. my exhaust isnt terrible its a magnaflow cat on a n/a lancer but man cops give me no break when i get pulled over. where are you guys getting all these tickets?
