I am honestly super stoked for canalside. Hockey in the winter in the makeshift canal they are building, with the concert series in the summer and all the other attractions that will be down there, I think it will make a great spot to check out.
You mean between the water front where its insanely cold half the year? or the projects that are 400yds from Cobblestone?
I worked at the arena and for half the year its an extremely shitty walk to even go from the Arena to Milos on the corner.
People don’t realize it because people don’t hang around that area very much when its nice out but that area is extremely shitty around the arena.
Go look from Chicago St over - Google Maps
They decided to build those lofts right next to the projects and the answer to make those people feel safe…Throw a giant fucking fence around it which defeats open city living and having an area people can walk around for shopping, food, etc
All im saying is that its about time that area gets developed. And yes I have been down there during the winter months where your face gets frostbite after 1 minute. But oh well we live in buffalo, if you want it to always be nice out go to florida, cali etc. Im just happy something is being done!
When I was 18 the only thing there was coke dealers and hookers. Seriously. lol …oh, and House of Quinn.
All the old people always say that
It was the red light district of Buffalo
Well I didn’t go there for the either hahaha and I am pretty sure when you were 18 it was alot different than when I was 18.
Fucking saloons and horses
I have zero interest of going to chip save for bacchus. I like bacchus.
I dont usually post on this stuff but for some reason i was feeling hateful.
this is what is what i posted on a picture on one of their new apps.
“Looks good and i hope they do well but i have a hard time seeing people coming down to the “chip strip” to spend that kind of money on a consistant basis. Between the bums, puddles of vomit on the side walk, and the piles of garbage from a busy weekend at bottoms up its going to be a stretch. I hope im wrong but a bit pessimistic.”
this is what they fired back with.
"you could say the same thing to Bacchus, but instead of closing, they’ve expanded by absorbing the space formerly occupied by Third Room. Soho, a nightlife staple, is now a restaurant. Papaya, Chocolate Bar, Bada Bing, Salsarita’s and Buffalo Tap House all add to the dining mix. The street is changing from a strip of bars to a patchwork of offices, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The Lodge is continuing that trend and after we open, Chippewa Street will no longer be looked at the same.
Unlike · 2 · 19 hours ago…The Lodge And there are bums on Elmwood and Allen too, that’s just one of the pitfalls of living in a city ;)Like · 18 hours ago…
It is a really cool concept but as someone who they would market to as someone in their 20’s, the parking and dealing with the dude bros of Chippewa at the other clubs is not worth it. Too much crime, muggings, stabbings, cars getting damaged, and other BS to go down there.
It will be interesting with the state requiring all new liquor licenses to require a kitchen and see if that gets those shitty bars out of there. Really would like to have an entertainment district here but I think Chippewa is a lost cause. Hopefully they can make more progress with the waterfront before that is run over by bums.
The difference between when you worked at the arena and now is that there are definite plans in place to remake the lower 1st ward and grain elevator alley. There are redevelopment plans slated for canalside, ohio st and mixed use rehabs in and around the area including the old Rich creamery that has been vacant since the 90’s.
Other than that I agree.
People are trying and that’s the problem with Buffalo. We beat them down for trying something, and really shame on us for that. I share the feelings of most of the people on the board when it comes to The Lodge. However, to avoid just speculative hating, I will give it a try just to see what’s the what before I condemn it forever. The author of the reply to thunderbunny is correct though, the plans have been out there for a while to change the area and a few business owners/restauranteurs/developers are working hard to make that a reality. Whether or not the population will take to it, only time will tell. There are many new ventures starting up in the area that it’s hard not to look around and say he may be right. It’s more than just Chippewa itself. Every street off of it has something going on. A rising tide lifts all boats. With all the restaurant activity that is going on down there everyone will benefit it’s only a matter of time.
The interesting thing about Buffalo is that we have a declining population and a stagnant tourism industry, people are always leaving. Where other cities with a vibrant tourism industry can have restaurants that suck and survive, Buffalo isn’t that lucky. If you want to survive in Buffalo you have to have excellent food, good service and be consistent every minute of your existence. Buffalo people will go where they feel these three things are being met and they will stick to these places. Very few people venture out of their comfort zones to try new places. Money is tight in the minds of Buffalo people and they don’t like feeling as though they may be potentially wasting it on a place that they may not like. Of all the cities I’ve been to Buffalo is one of the toughest to be successful in. Between low population density, refined (picky) palates and a penny pinching mindset you have to be the cream of the crop to survive. With few people coming in for tourism or business purposes you have to rely on the local crowd heavily to survive. If you think about it, it makes sense. How many of you have had friends and family move away and the one thing they miss about Buffalo is the food? Probably 100% of you.
So I’d say give it a shot. At the very least you will have pried yourself out of your comfort zone for a couple hours and experienced something new, good or bad, maybe it will broaden your horizons or expand your world from the 10 square miles that is your particular suburban habitat.
Anyone interested in all the good things going on in Buffalo check out www.buffalorising.com they pride themselves on being upbeat about Buffalo.
Also many people are concerned with parking and general security. I do believe that is part of the overall plans, however there are plenty of lots in the chippewa area, you just can’t park right at the restaurant.
But ignore the comments. Seriously a place could open up handing out 100 dollar bills and curing cancer and people would comment on how shitty it is or some other bull shit thing.
Well again, that’s Buffalo for you lol. Speculative haters. Guilty.
I have just come to the conclusion that people who live in Buffalo are just miserable. Whether they are talking about sports, canalside, the skyway, the waterfront, the zoo…Everybody is just so negative about everything and they always have to critique someone else for trying to make a difference.
I know you guys pick on me because you like me… …Right?
The idea looks pretty awesome but like people have said the location may kill it. I hope not.
I’m personally looking forward to the opening. I’ll defiantly stop down and check it out for an earlier dinner/happy hour time on a Friday. I don’t have high hopes for it but I do hope they suceed in changing the image of the area. It might work for a while too.
Yea ill admit i was a debbie downer, but like stated earlier if this place was somewhere else, (elmwood, pearl street area, arean area) i would be liek fuck yea! good place to go watch a game, get dinner. with the exception of Baccus everyplace he mentioned is a shit hole and the only reason their burger bar(soho) is open is becuase its funded by the nigth life at soho. Papya is in a hotel and not in the “red zone” of chippewa its a huge difference. if you go down to chip which ill admit i go more than i should all the trash is where the lodge is going, infront of papya is dead with people traffic. Who ever runs that page brough up Bada bing as being a resturant that is changing thing down there, sorry but the most expensive thing onthe menu is like 12 bucks and at nigth that palce if filled with trash.
I think youve underestimated the power of the bro in Buffalo
This is so dead on.
The city isn’t the greatest and the weather sucks 7 months of the year but overall, it is not a bad place to live in the big picture. There is parts about other cities I like a lot but if you are in a well paying industry in Buffalo, it is awesome.
