Hey guys sorry to revive such an old thread (but at least I did a search!). I’ve been hassled for my tints twice in the past couple of months in Buffalo by the same cop. Thankfully the second time he didn’t remember that the first time he pulled me over he said he would give me a ticket for them the next time he saw me. Both times he told me that the fine is $150/window so $600. That seems to be a lot higher than any ticket anyone else has gotten. Anyone know is this is true or is he just trying to scare me? A $60 fine is no big deal, $600 would be rough to say the least. He told me that now that he knows where I live “he’ll be seeing me more often.” Creepy sh*t right? Anyone have any experience with tint tickets within the City of Buffalo?
I can tell you that if you keep your windows tinted you will continue to have problems. That’s NY, that’s how it is.
As far as fines go for the city, i have no idea. They can probably charge whatever they want.
also, tints. lol
What’s funny is that I had them for almost a year before I got bothered - and only one cop out of the thousand that have passed me has stopped me. I know I should expect issues I’m just worried about the dollar amount of the fine.
There’s so many benefits to tints though that I see:
- My car is kept cooler in the summer which helps with it being a black car with a black interior
- Jerks behind me with their headlights aimed wrong don’t bother me in the rearview
- It would help prevent glass from shattering in an accident
- It helps the car look less like a grocery-getter
That’s why I plan on keeping them, just don’t want a $600 ticket. $60 would be fine. lol
I don’t understand…just put legal tints on.
I drove my Grand Am for 4 years around Rochester with no tickets, sold it to my sister in law and she got a ticket a week later. You win some you lose some. Get rid of the tint or move to a different State if you don’t want to be bothered.
There is no such thing.
exactly, anything other than factory glass is not legal.
70% tint is basically nothing.
Most factory glass is tinted to right around 70 percent. Mine was 72 percent on an older ford thunderbird.
or move to arizona, no tint laws… (even if there is, they don’t enforce, hell, the patrol cars down there have 5% around)
I’ve gotten over a dozen and haven’t had to pay a single one, then again none were in the city either. I doubt $150 a window.
my mom was dropping me off to get my car and she got pulled over in her gtp and she paid 150 this was like 6 weeks ago[COLOR=“Silver”]
There is NO reason why dark window tint should be illegal… people in the southern states seem to have no problem driving with dark windows… do they just not trust us Northern folk?
How did you get out of them? I hope you didn’t take the tints off each time… lol

x2 - I was just in Florida and damn near every car had tints a lot darker than the ones I have on my car. I know it’s hotter down there obviously but we get to the high 90’s here in Buffalo in the summer.

Was that in Buffalo?
borderline harassment right there … happens again ask if he is being a racist … even if your both the same color say your part native american … and hate crimes scare the shit outta them as they get labeld
its illegal up north for the safety of the officer who has to walk up to some persons car in who knows where and has no visuaql until he is there and by then it could be to late for the officer … southern states are different due to climate … tint is al most a safety issue for young ones in cars and that kiunda crap …
…not sure now adays since i have gotten older the cars got faster and the tint and stuff is no longer me … but … it worked for me twice years ago … pled not guilty … got my court date , borrowed someone else car to go to court stopped at autozone bought a roll of tint and cut it up and krinkled it … walk into court with that in the bag and tell the judge u removed it … like i said this worked long time ago … but could be worth a shot
good luck
I’ve been running 2.5% tint on my truck for a while now, never been stopped, I have been followed but never stopped. It all depends on where your located. I’m in niagara county and the only issues people have had are with the state troopers.
But in case I do ever have an issue, I’ve got a razor blade ready to peel the tint off infront of the officer… Afterall it did only cost me 20 bucks… It’s nice to have friends that tint for a living!
I had to pay over 10 Window tint tickets in my escort. There was never a time when it was under $100. I think, after surcharges its about $150/window. I’ve been stopped by troopers on I-90, Buffalo State College campus PD, small town cops from my home town area (Doesnt pay to drive the rice-mobile I guess) Only once did I have them write me a ticket for 2 windows, which I paid the fines anyways, every other time they just used the meter (usually on my drivierside front) then just wrote the ticket for that one. I was threatened with being given tickets for all 5 (windsheild strip was like 7" as well) but that never ended up happening
I had 17%…god I loved them, but now I also love not getting pulled over on a weekly basis
theres alot of confusion about tint law in this thread.
just to clear things up, the legal limit for tint on the front driver and passanger side glass is actually what the glass is tinted as directly from the factory. you can not put any tint no matter how light it is on these windows and still be legal in nys. its not happening. the rear windows you can put tint on, percentage varies based on what window it is. if you have a dark interior the tint will appear darker than it is and you will be hassled more. that being said, i have 35% all around on my bmw and it has black interior. i have been hassled for it, and have gotten 2 tickets, ~1 per year. town of wheatfield was 50 bucks, amherst was 125. im currently looking into seeing if i can qualify for the exemption for tinted windows as the sun and bright lights does infact bother me. for those curious, with the exemption you can only have 35% tints.
LEOs in southern states seem to have NO problem identifying individuals in vehicles with dark windows… that’s not an excuse… I’ve stopped many vehicles with dark windows, every cop knows how to look into a vehicle with dark windows. Window tint tickets are a sole money maker, theres no reason for different laws by state
