Im going to rent a apartment in colonie and my landlord is really awesome and willing to do the needed work, ok s with that out of the way… My problem is I can hear my neighbor through my bedroom wall and it crazy loud, what can be done to fix this? I’ve done some reading and insulation and two layers of drywall works and green glue compound… What have you guys done/used to sound proof or reduce the noise?
There is special sound deadening insulation for interior walls. The problem you will have is studding the wall thicker to accommodate 2 layers of insulation. Is it just 1 adjoining wall?
It’s like 3 walls two bedroom walls and one living room wall, what do you mean studding the wall thicker? I was a home depo just a little while ago and saw the insulations
Sound attenuation blankets, resilient channels and if you are willing to spend the money use “QuietRock” GWB and constructed in the desired STC rated assembly. What is the existing wall construction now? and what STC rating are you trying to achieve will determine what the wall assembly will need.
…but wall is just one component, if the ceiling/floor assembly is not constructed to achieve any kind of STC rating, doing up the wall will only help so much…
2 cents.
Find another place to live or tell your neighbor to pipe down!
It’s just drywall as of right now, I don’t think there is any insulation between the interior walls
I am just not clear exactly what you intended to do. You wanna add something to the existing wall? or demo the wall and build a new one?
Yea I’d like to demo the 3 walls and install the right stuff in there
Read this: http://www.usg.com/rc/system-catalogs/acoustical-assemblies-en-SA200.pdf
If that is the case you don’t have to get the QuietRock if you don’t want to to save some $$.
It sounded to me like the wall you are demoing could be a fire rated assembly that separates your unit and your neighbor’s unit. A word of warning, your landlord needs to find out if that is the case and what rating that wall is so the new wall will at least have the same rating as the old wall you are replacing. The last thing you wanna do is replace a say 1hr fire rated partition with a normal 30 mins wall, and if the thing burns down and someone got hurt it became an issue.
Are you doing the work? or the Landlord is doing the work? Otherwise to be perfectly honest, why would a Landlord just let the tenant demo and rebuild a wall in his property, which he will have to assume all the risk associated with it is beyond me.

he will be doing the work i will be helping as he is a good friend of mine
I had this issue in one of my rental. Actually the building my wife and I were living in. The original neighboring tenants were quiet no problem newer ones slightly louder. The first wall I did was inbetween the living rooms of both apartments. That wall consisted of standard 2x4 stud and 1/2" rock on both sides. I stuff the wall the sound deadening fibermat insulation available to lowes.(I want to say Owens corning product). While that did yield improvement it really was still louder then I was happy with. In the bedroom I actually furred the wall out to 7" thick and put in 2 layers of the sound deadening insulation with the joints staggered. This yielded a more livable result, but honestly I’m still not thrilled about it. However we no longer live there and the materials I used were expensive enough I have a feeling you will find that the cost of this project might be more then you think. Materials cost have gone up substantially. Anyway good luck if you need a hand just shoot me a text you have my number.
