Top Gear S.22: Clarkson Fired -> Amazon -> The Grand Tour [Nov 18th]

It sucks but he really put the BBC in a jam. He punched a coworker while being on his final notice. No matter how valuable an employee you are I can’t think of any large company that could sweep that under the rug.

You mean like how things work in the real world?

How many actors, musicians, and athletes have gotten away with all kinds of actual crimes with a slap on the wrist by the court systems not even a company which will actual see financial loss.

yeah would have been better to let him finish out the last 3 shows.

I suppose that speaks to the integrity of the BBC. It definitely sucks but when you give someone a ‘final notice’ and he still goes against you it would show incredible weakness to not follow through.

I support their decision due to the circumstances, but I really hope the trio sticks together and makes a new show with another network. That way we have 2 good shows to watch.

I have a feeling we will all be watching whatever car show he does next. Considering how long it was between seasons, we may not really be losing too much.

It would be a pretty cool move for him to start a new show, with the unresolved P1 LaFerrari 918 showdown.

X…

Court != Employer.

TV personalities get fired constantly for doing FAR less than Clarkson has gotten away with over the years. He really didn’t leave the BBC a choice this time, especially after all the shit they got in with the Jimmy Savile coverup.

Tony Hall’s statement:

Who else has had a successful career that long with one of the most popular shows on TV that got fired?

Martha Stewart?

Charlie Sheen?
Paula Dean?

And neither one of them physically assaulted a coworker.

You’re really going to make me pull stats and revenue lol

Save the time and just show me another TV personality with as many warnings as Clarkson who physically assaulted a coworker and still has their job. I love Top Gear, and have every single episode and special, but I can see how the BBC didn’t really have a choice.

May and Hammond initial reactions:

Just lol at BBC. But Im hearing Netflix could be a landing spot as a new show for the 3 of them

Like James more or less said, it has to be the three of them.

This, exactly. It was obviously more than just a minor scuffle. The guy went to the hospital for treatment. And I know that people often over-react and go to the ER, but I think it indicates that it was at least somewhat serious of a punch/fight/whatever.

It’s unfortunate, but this is how these situations SHOULD be treated. I know the real world is what it is, these things usually get swept under the rug, but that doesn’t make it right. He’s paid handsomely and has one of the best jobs in the world, he should have just shut up and done his job.

It shows the decline of the USA, we would be happy if it were only a couple punches thrown. lol Our controversy is always way bigger here. :frowning:

Netflix is an interesting option considering Top Gear brings the BBC 50 million dollars. Netflix spends about $100 million on a season of House of Cards while a season of Top Gear costs the BBC around 7 million.

Seems like a no-brainer until you think about the fact that Top Gear is watched in 212 territories, many of which Netflix doesn’t exist. Netflix can’t hope for anywhere near those profits if they can’t broadcast to the people.

This is why I’m still expecting to see it pop up on ITV.

THEY SPEND 100 MILLION PER SEASON OF HOUSE OF CARDS?!?!?!?!?

Sorry, $50 million per season of House of Cards. Read too fast and missed the part that the $100 million was for 2 seasons.

Point still holds true though, Netflix could afford Top Gear, just not sure what chance they have of getting anything like Top Gears 50 million a year in profits when they couldn’t reach nearly as many countries.

Well, do you think he’d go somewhere with the same or more restrictions than the BBC?

He has said in the past that you can’t do Top Gear on a network that relies on commercials for revenue. (Ford sponsors the show, the hosts are then pressured to give positive reviews of Ford vehicles, etc.)

So rule out any network with commercials and what’s left?
