torrent help needed

so i decided to get in on the whole torrent thing. i downloaded azereus to my iBook. found the torrent i needed, and opened it. i got an error saying i needed port 6881 open in order to DL it. i’m sure you can use any port as long as it’s open in the router, but this is where it gets complicated. there’s a business complex a couple hundred feet down the street from my house that broadcasts an unencrypted wi-fi signal off of a T1. i’m not exactly paying for a cable modem. is there anyway to get around this? my room mate is able to do it on his computer, so i know it’s possible, but he doesn’t know how he did it.

thanks guys.

EDIT: i’m running OS 10.3.7 if it matters.

unencrypted t1… holy shit gold mine.

you might be able to change the port in azereus… i havenet messed with that in a long time… and my laptop is mia for the time being

if you sell some phones i’ll tell ya…just kidding, i have not idea dude

you wouldn’t believe my excitement when i plugged in my wi-fi card for the first time and saw something besides “Linksys” as a network there. it was a great day cancelling adelphia.

i don’t really understand the whole port thing i guess. do i just try random ports until i get something that’s open? since i’m stealing the connection, i can’t exactly call them and ask them what to do.

couldn’t you just have looked up from your computer 5 feet across the kiosk from me and told me that?

i betting that the wifi you are connecting to are blocking the ports that you need…

can you get on the net regular like? like browse yahoo…

btw what you are doing is illegal… just so you know :snky:

lol im thinking if its a business its blocked, the SSID might be there but the ports are blocked.

i suspect it’s illegal, but i’ve also heard from numerous sources that because it’s unencrypted, it’s legal. i don’t really know, but i’ve been using it for about 6 months with no problems other than varying bandwidth and range issues. i sometimes drop the signal. using the net for browsing is fine. no issues at all.

as for them blocking the port, i’m not sure that’s the issue. i’ve been using limewire with NO issues at all for awhile now.

i think it was just funnier to post instead.

its def illegal, but only if u get cought

Damn if there is no encryption on the wifi than chances are there is a default password on the router…

it’s been 6 months and both me and my room mate use it heavily, so i’m not too worried. thanks for the heads up though

there’s no password at all. the password isn’t the issue, it’s the port. i don’t understand what you are saying.

The password to administer the router, not to use the wifi… From there you could probably setup port forwarding (if it uses NAT). There probably are ways to get around the port issues tho… Sounds like a question for google if no one has an answer.

there is a pw on the router, i set mine up that way, since we get ppl around here searching for wifi all the time, lol
dummies

oh cool. i see what you are saying. how would i get into the router settings and what is a default password? i know nothing about computers. sorry.

and i did google it. i came up with this portforward.com site. it just confused the hell out of me and i said fuck it, i’m gonna post in the huge nerd corner. lol.

and word buickGN, we had ours like that too when we had adelphia.

maybe you should just get a Dell.

way to be that guy. maybe i should walk across the kiosk and punch you in the face. you still have yet to give me one reason why i should switch to windows.

log into the router and give ur ip adress access to the port necessary to use bit torrent

heh. that sounds great…

how do i do it?
