CLIFFS: Toyota has extended its warranty on older tacomas (1995-2000) to 15 years due to excessive frame rust. to Toyota for customer satisfaction
My brother owns a 97 Tacoma, I’m going to check it out tomorrow during the day. He might be able to get a pretty penny for this!
Good friend of mine was fortunate enough to have Toyota buy his Tacoma back for 1.5 times KBB value. I think he said he would get between $8k-12k, depending on vehicle condition. When he went in to the dealer they ended up not allowing him to take his truck home with him! …gave him a loaner until he found a replacement vehicle.
Toyota’s, rust. Unpossible. That said that is a pretty lengthy corrosion warranty, pretty impressive on their part. But I’d imagine positive PR would be better than if a suspension mount or something collapsed/broke due to said rust. Quite the good way to make lemonade.
But seriously, it’s a great PR move. Keep the trucks out of the news for killing people…PLUS…the consumer gets the check for their truck, and turns right back around and buys a new one. It may be a costly endeavor, but it should pay off in the long run.
:word: thought the same thing when I got a letter in the mail regarding the steering relay rod compaign on my 95 pickup. They ended up giving me all brand new inner and outer tie rod ends along with the relay rod and an alignment for free on truck with 130k miles that was 12 years old!
its not like they’re deciding to do a service for old tacoma owners out of the goodness of their corporate hearts…some actuaries and lawsuit specialists figured out that it would be better economically to take the writeoff on buying them back now than deal with the potential repercussions in court from owners whose frames melted, especially before someone gets hurt.
That said, its good to see companies being proactive. Dr. Ray Vegso would be proud.
