Track day miata build

I got this.

I have been chasing a phantom electrical issue that prevented the gauge cluster from working. Turns out there was a plug that was disconnected in the pass side far right under the dash. It was sorta hung up on the dashbar so I never even saw it. Plugged it in and everything is back to normal. Nice and simple.

Car looks like its on life support. Lol.

Buttoning up the odds and ends. Got all new eccentrics installed because the OEM ones were concave-- way cheaper to replace eccentrics than to pay for a new alignment if this one got knocked out of whack. Kinda hard to see in this pic but you get the idea. The newer version has thicker “washers” if you will.

I ordered raybestos hubs and of course they came with the wrong ABS ring. I am 99% sure timken stopped making abs hubs (pn 513155)-- they are not available anywhere except ebay. OEM hubs are 140 a piece. Luckly, the old ABS rings fit on the new hubs perfectly. The more rings the better…right? Hubs were repacked with amsoil grease.

Started getting the tow vehicle ready today. Got a friction sway control thing to make the trailer more stable at high speed.

The tow package.

I think she is ready for the alignment.

Also, Im looking for a few things.
–Another set of 15x9 wheels if any of you miata (or honda?) guys know of any for sale locally.
–6 bolt leather steering wheel (relatively cheap)

looks all business

And no longer ghey, but definitely a carrier.

Brought the car home today and drove it a bunch. This thing is fun-- cant wait to get it out on the track. hopefully next wednesday we are going to TMP for the evening track session.

I should get a video of me getting out of it. Probably more entertaining than watching Wallenda walk over the falls tethered.

I went with Stuie to tmp last night. This car is a blast. I see how miatas got such a following. He was able to get into the 1:28s, which was better than the Dodge viper that was there. :biglol: Both Go pros ran out of battery. Hopefully he got some video with the viper.

I got one run of me alone and one of you with me as a pass. I fell into a coma by the time I got home so I didn’t upload any.

<3 I love Miatas

gay.

I’m going to need new rear tires by the end of this month at this rate. Slideways is so much fun with the LSD.

Stuie, are you going to the NYSpeed summer meet? lapping?

Im not sure. Ill have to see what my work schedule is like, and see if i have another track day planned. Have to see what weekends we plan to do nelson.

Im on my phone so embedding is way harder than I feel like doing right now.

Ok. in car. first half is me, second half is harvey. Both on our first outings of the day. The cameras died after that.

I am sure there is another second or 2 in the car once I learn it better. I was consistently over braking for turn 2, and i was having trouble keeping my momentum up for the second half of the track-- hence my 2 slides. I was upsetting the suspension with way way too much steering/brake input, and that’s probably the roughest section of track right there adding to the mess. The first time I was out (a week ago) I almost put it into the concrete a couple times so I am a little shy on the last turns still. I’m hoping to get consistent 1:28’s by the end of the year, and hope to get a low 1:27 as my fast lap. Not too bad for 100hp.

I think I figured out what the phantom noise is during hard cornering. The axle appears to be actually making contact with the height adjustment ring on the shock body. Identical markings on both sides. Ive never seen this being an issue before-- not quite sure why its happening on my car.

Installed a duct on the driver side. Hopefully it will get some more air into the cabin.

Trying to get the passenger seat in a better location. I dont think its going to happen. Without the relief bend in the crossbar, the pass seat just sits in an awkward position, causing you to bash your fucking head on the rollbar when you go over bumps. I cant mount the seat lower due to harness angle, so I think my only option is to add another crossbar to mount the pass side harnesses to. This is mounted at its lowest position.

Let me know next time you wrench, I’ll be glad to give a hand

Id love to extend an invite but I dont own the shop that I do all of the work at, so I dont really feel comfortable inviting people I dont know very well over. If something were to happen, I could lose that resource which would devastate me (free tire mounting/balancing = big savings). I appreciate the offer though. There’s a bunch of us doing the 9-5 session at TMP on the 28th-- all the miata guys should come up!

Yeah like it was mentioned previously, it did not look like the cage was meant to have a pass seat installed just by the look of the harness bar. That can easily be changed though without too much trouble.

I think the issue is that most people blow out the seat belt towers to put in the “harness bar”. The seat fits, you just cant get the correct angle for the harnesses on the pass side due to the height of the bar. I need to figure out a way to bottom mount the seat. I am currently side mounting it-- I think bottom mounting it would allow it to sit way closer to the tranny tunnel. I think that would give enough clearance between your head and the bar so it wouldnt be as much of an issue. Its not really an option to add a seat relief to that side of the cage because the seat would still just hit the diagonal bar.

Got down to 1:27.6 this weekend at tmp. Not too bad for 100hp…haha. Heres the vid. I know, I forgot to connect my hans tethers. Playing with a ferrari at 4:40.

I took 1 second off my previous best time in this car, and I am now faster in this than I was in my sti. Best lap of the day was 1:27.6 with a number of laps in the high 1:27’s. I am extremely consistent at getting 1:28 laps (every lap was a 1:27 or :28, minus the laps that I shut the damn car off).

I think I can gain some more time at the last turn, as I am still a bit skiddish after my offroad excursions last time in this turn. I really don’t want to meet that concrete wall at an open lapping day.

I brake way too soon for turn 2, but I think I will get better with that as I get better at heel/toe (i was being cautious because I was screwing up every once in a while…didnt want an 80mph offroad event). I come into the corner saying “brake late” over and over again in my head but my feet dont listen.

I also need to do something differently at turn 7.
I cant tell if I am over-revving or what when i downshift-- i either need to take more speed into the turn and stay in 3rd or do something completely different. The speed that I am going is right between gears-- obvious answer is to go faster.

In turn 10, I started taking more of a straight line through the corner (learned that from a friend). That allows me to have a much higher corner entry/exit speed than the old line i took (i stay in 3rd now) and I feel that the car is more stable (the track on the far right at corner entry is extremely bumpy making braking difficult with my old line).

I feel that I am starting to get better at the “momentum driving” that is required for these cars. My second event I spent way too much time shifting and not enough time trying to drive smoothly. This video is much less dramatic, but a second faster than I was before.

That car looks really fun. Cool video. That definitely looks like a great time.
