Tranny Drop

Hey Guys,

While my new clutch will be arrive shortly i’ve decided to take out the driveshaft/tranny myself.

With all the bolts/connections there i would like to do as little work possible. Anyone mind giving me a play by play on this?

Thanks,
Fitzy

hey thanks!

here it is for everyone else thats also intrested

first put your car up on some axel stands or whatever you have avail. first drain all the fluid in tha tranny with the square hole on the bottom of the tranny just put your socket right in and undo it then, start by undoing the 4-14mm nuts and bolts on the back of the drive shaft, then proceed to take out the 2 bolts for the center bearing where two driveshafts connect. than pull your driveshaft towards the back of the car its should slide out faily easly just catch it when it comes all the way out lol. now start on the front of the tranny where the engine connects not sure how many bolts there is but you should be alble to get to all of them except one!, there is one you can feel above the starter that is a real bitch to get so get someone with small hands to help or jam your hand in there but you can get it i did on my ('92 KA24DE), now is a good time to put a jack under your tranny to support it on the square plate, then go back to the end of the tranny near where you pulled the driveshaft out and undo those 2 bolts at the back holding the tranny to the car but before moving the tranny go inside your car and remove your shifter (if you don’t know how to do this let me know ill explain that for you to) now you should be able to pull the tranny back about 5-6 inchs and it will pull off the engines out put shaft you then drop it out and roll it away that give you acess to your fly wheel and clutch good luck

awsome… do you have to remove the shifter ? as long as you remove the interior panels, metal square bracket and rubber boot cant u just drop the tranny with the shifter ?

this is for SRs, not sure about KA’s:

you need to put a jack on the engine (front of engine where lower oilpan meets aluminum oil pan - where it is flat so oil pan wont crush) and lean the engine back with the jack (tranny mount already off) to get enough clearance to get the tranny off

also you need to rotate the tranny so doing it with the shifter still in is a serious bitch. Also since it needs to move back first then down having a shifter in there makes it a real pita. Removing the shifter really isn’t that hard, if its stock just remove the C-clip, if its b&m do the first 4 bolts then drop the tranny and the last two are a joke.

Good luck dude

i have a feeling i’m gonna be doing one or two of these this season

good thinking sasha, i never thought about sliding it back with the shifter hitting the sides of the cunt… thanks…

Yes, that is exactly the same for KA, including the jacking up of the front of the engine to get it to clear while pulling to the rear (that part is important to have one guy looking to see when the back of the engine starts to raise too, you don’t want to do that).

I was gunna comment on how easy he made it sound, just pull it out and lower it with the jack… yeah… right. heh

better to forget the jack and use your knees on the tailstock and your hands on the bell housing, you can get it done alot quicker that way.

It isn’t that heavy, it is all aluminum… except for the guts.

yes and it is best to remove the shifter mine hit when i did it in my ka and i ended up just bashing the hell out of the hole to get it out lol ( it was my parts car anyway) but thanks guys for the further input on how to do this i was just mentioning everything i could think of that i did good luck guys

ps lol funny how now i have to do it - i burned up my clutch in my sr20det lol

also loosenening the engine mounts half way (but not undoing them) will help encourage this engine tilting process

its one of those times when it relaly is ok to say

“its not heavy its just awkward”

i used a skateboard iwth magazines ziptied to it to get to the right height. it worked mint.

original, i bet they were option magazines :!:

haha

lots of car and driver, i had a subscription to that mag since i was like 12

remember those elementry school magazine subscription things. yea. they only had car and driver
