I know a lot of people buy cars out of state around here, and I can’t seem to find the answer on the DMV site. But does anyone know if DC offers Temp tags for transport?
I really don’t to roll the dice an slap a plate from a different car on and don’t feel like putting it on a Trailer for 400 miles.
Temporary tags, which are paper 45-day tags, are issued to out of state residents that recently purchased a used vehicle in DC, to new DC residents with expired out of state tags who have not been through DC inspection and to new DC residents with expired out of state tags who are waiting for their out-of-state title from the lienholder. Temporary tags are also issued to salvage vehicles and commercial/for hire vehicles which must be inspected and classified by the inspection station prior to registration.
The following process is used for temporary tags:
Documents required to obtain a temporary tag

The temporary tag fee, including RPP (if applicable), will cost $13
Law enforcement and parking officers will recognize the temporary tag as valid without the vehicle having a valid inspection sticker

I had temp tags from MI and NC. Works perfect for bringing car home and they’re usually valid long enough to give you plenty of time to get your NY plates. My first autocross in the GTO was on a NC paper license plate.
Pretty sure any valid insurance would count as “valid DC insurance”. It’s not like you have to buy an insurance policy in DC just to drive there.
I think the license requirement is a typo because it directly contradicts the very first line, “Temporary tags, which are paper 45-day tags, are issued to out of state residents that recently purchased a used vehicle in DC”. Why would an out of state resident have a DC license? A 5 minute phone call would clear it up.
