turbo cleaning help please

so i bought a sr from auto dream and i decided that i would bring it home and clean and paint every thing befor the install …im glad i did most the gaskets are toast and the turbo looks like it was spinning sludge im not sure how to clean the turbo out or if i have to lube it up after so any input would be great

You sure this wasn’t off some ford? regardless, take off the compressor housing I used part/brake cleaner, whatever gets the oil off.

That is disgusting.

Id be more worried about how it got that way. Looks like the seals are toast.

ya what seals im getting a gasket kit so il will replace everything what else should i be worried about?

Well what I would be concerned with, from what I read you bought an SR20?

Then that wont be the only place that sludge was going…

Did you check the intake I wouldnt be suprised if it looked as exciting as this wheel…

Id go for the full rebuild kit. Not sure where youd get it though.

ya the intake was messy but got it cleaned the throttle body was black with shit im getting worried about this engine auto dream called and said it would be no problem if i wanted to pic another one and that they dont know the condition of the stuff till the build.

the turbo has some nicks on the turbine i found them after i cleaned it out .but the turbo now does not make and sounds i got it goinging smooth ill get some picks up soon

Id recommend to pull your head off while its out of the car and check your internals, anything in your intake could possibly be in your cylinders!

well after i cleaned every thing out for like 2 hours i got the turbo spinning with no noice but i found nicks on the turbine so im not to sure what to think
. not sure if u can really see it from the pic but there are light silver marks on the fins

Most SR’s like to dump some oil in the intake. If this is a redtop, your motor has been dumping a bit of sludge from the top of the head into the intake for years now. I wouldn’t be too worried, but I would reccommend replacing all the seals anyways.

The seals tend to dry out and crack if the motor has been sitting for a while. It’s likely that there is nothing wrong at all. Just buy a catch can!

I don’t think the knicks are too serious… If there were gaping shards or serious holes in your fins that would be more serious.

AFAIK, it’s quite normal to have slightly knicked fins… Think of how fast a turbo spins and how many years someone’s gotten out of that turbo. I’m sure it’s fine to install now and keep using for a while.

Why don’t you order a turbo rebuild kit from ebay, and while you’re waiting to get it fire up your new engine. Then, when you get the kit you can unbolt your turbo one weekend and rebuild the whole thing
