An unusual tactic by State Police is catching speeders off guard on one local highway.
Officers dressed as construction workers along Interstate 79 have caught dozens of motorists in a construction zone between Bridgeville and the Kirwan Heights exits.
“We did it yesterday, wrote 28 citations and I think there were three written warnings. Today we did it, same location on 79, and we wrote approximately 35 citations within a matter of 3 and a half hours,” said State Police Trooper Robin Mungo.
Parked along the side of the road, a trooper who is part of a five-man enforcement team, poses as a construction worker or part of a PennDOT crew and using radar, he clocks the speed of cars going through work zones.
If a driver is cited for speeding in an active work zone, the fine is automatically doubled.
And if the driver goes 11 or more miles over the posted work zone speed, not only do they get a fine, but also get their license suspended for 15 days, according to a mandatory state law.
Operation Yellow Jacket will be running again today in a location in Allegheny County.
The undercover police presence is part of the ongoing effort to crackdown on aggressive drivers and make the highways safer.
So far, more than 60 citations have been issued as part of Operation Yellow Jacket.

You only get a double fine if the “active workzone” lights are flashing right? I have always been under the impression that if the lights are not flashing, that you can go the regular speed limit, but once the lights are on, you have to go the construction speed limit. I’m always worried that they won’t have the lights on and then give me the double fine.
Maybe if people would learn to stop gassing it up to 45mph then slamming on the brakes and coming to a complete stop we wouldn’t have so many issues here. I’ve driven in traffic in many cities, nowhere else has the ridiculous variations in speed that we have here in Western PA. 0-40-0-40 is common on 376 as you approach the tunnels…where there’s no reason to slow down in the first place.
Hey, we just added a 10% drink tax and now we’re busting people for going 11mph over the speed limit. I can’t seem to figure out why Pittsburgh isn’t growing like major cities elsewhere…the government is so wise and reasonable here…why are we still losing population???

No kidding. I was up there for work during the week of christmas and I was shocked that the speed limit was like 65 or 70 within the city with entrance and exit ramps on both the right and left. I was thinking that I would be lucky to make it out alive, but everyone seemed to handle it really well. Most people signalled and were keeping a constant speed. Nothing like pittsburgh.
they have been working on the onramp from bridgeville to N79 for a while now. so its pretty sneaky that they do this. our trucks sit in bridgeville and drive to carnegie 30+ times a day. i cant believe none of our trucks have been nailed yet
Try driving in another major city…like lets say Chicago on the Dan Ryan Expressway…the driving in Pennsylvania as a whole from what I’ve seen isn’t shit compared to other places, especially when it’s Pittsburgh being compared and that is factual.
