URGENT, Misfiring, Flashing lights etc...

I’m at a library to post this, my car is in a parking lot like a kilometer away, and I need some advice on wtf to do. Here’s what happened:

-Car drove beautifully in the morning, except for the periodic alt. belt squeek.

-Tried teaching a friend how to drive manual…he stalled SEVERAL times, redlined in neutral, hurt the clutch, hurt the transmission…etc. Clutch feels funny, takes some force to put it in first, as if clutch isn’t fully disengaged.

-I saw the Antilock, Volt & E-brake lights flashing every 2 seconds all at the same time… I told him to stop and get out. What does this mean? Check engine light is off, oil pressure is fine, oil level is fine, all the fluids are topped up.

-Car sounded like it had a serious misfiring issue and the engine shakes like crazy under 2.2k, above that its smooth. Going to the back, when its idling rough you can hear BRR BRR BRR BRR from the exhaust, and feel the spaced out puffs of air like its running on 2 cylinders or something.

-My alternator belt was squeeking in the last few weeks, but I never had a charging problem. The belt is still turning the alt., but battery lost a lot of charge when driven with the charging light on for some time to get to the parking lot.

Summary:
Friend stalled car several times. Antilock light on, ebrake light on, charge light on and all 3 flashing periodically at the same time (like a diagnostic test or something). Car misfiring like a whore at low rpms (muscle car idle lol). Engine shakes violently until 2k, above that its fine.

After starting it the last time to check belts etc… the ebrake light is off (good), antilock light is stuck on, and charge light flashing.

dam…that guy should NEVERR touch a manual…that’s the worse noob experience I’ve ever heard of a guy trying to learn manual, dam dude I would hope he pays for some damage that he obviously caused…

maybe you blew your headgasket? fried the clutch? i’m not sure on this one, but it sounds like something mechanical got fucked.

Check the Engine Control fuse in the fuse box next to the battery and check alternator fuse as well for safe measure.

check all the coil packs

disconnect one at a time and see if you notice any change in the idle speed/quality

Sounds like ur alternator is toast and its not putting out enough voltage for the car to run at such low rpm’s then when you speed up the revs its putting out more voltage for the engine to run smoother.

try disconnecting your battery and see if the engine runs at all.

try hooking booster cables up too it and see if it runs better.

is the alt light always on?

The long black bolt and screw were loose, the alternator could be moved by hand…the alternator belt seemed to be installed inverted, the grooves were on the outside, and the smooth part was on the inside against the pulley WTF? After tightening that black bolt on the alternator, I charged the battery using a friend’s car. Started it, charge light went away.

Antilock light still on. No check engine light at all, didn’t ever encouter a CEL with this car. It works as a dummy light when IGN is turned on, but goes away after starting the car so the bulb is still good. Car still vibrates like crazy at low rpm, refuses to rev up too much because of the missing. Exhaust smells of fuel. Crappy seperated puffs in idle. Missing horribly when trying to drive.

Tried to drive it, it was in first, it would cut off when trying to accelerate and bog. I had my foot to the floor at one point, it wouldn’t accelerate, it would kick in and out.

Had the car towed home. Don’t know what to do now…****, this sucks.

I tried pulling each spark plug wire off individually, it made like no difference to the idle. Weird as hell…

I hope my motor’s not gone. It’s only been 6k since the “rebuild”. I really doubt my friend did much damage, he just slipped the clutch a bit excessively a couple of times. He stalled a couple of times. He went from first to second, but it wasn’t in second, it only went into neutral, and he pressed the gas, but the engine revved to like 6800-6900rpm. Shouldn’t really cause damage just a lot more wear than usual…it just felt horrible to see the car get abused like that, I never do that, I always drive safely and sanely.

The clutch has been feeling fucked up since I got the 5 spd. swap done. It just kept getting worse and worse over time. The clutch contact point is was very close to the top of the pedal. It slips on hard shifts. The clutch pedal vibrates like a gritty ABS buzzy brake pedal feeling when being depressed or pulling out (only during movement). This happens intermittenly, its there 80+% of the time though. There’s a TOB whine too which gets quieter when the clutch is depressed.

The oil has smelled like fuel since I got the engine rebuild. I hoped it would go away after the rings had set, but its still the same. I frequently change the oil because of that.

Seriously 240coupe, wtf happened to this car. I got the 5 spd from you, the clutch from you, the engine from you, all of them installed by you and your friend.

My starter bolt practically fell out 2 weeks ago, and I was stuck at canadian tire, while doing an oil change. They had to put a long bolt with a nut at the end so my starter could get realigned with the flywheel, it would just grind no cranking. They were like who the hell put this thing back together, and were cursing you since there was loose wiring everywhere, horrible oil leaks on a new engine, missing distributor bolt etc.

The shifter just lifts out of the hole, nothing holding it in. There’s a lot of other things, but I just want to fix them all one by one.

Really crappy day. Sorry for the excessively long post, I’m just super pissed.

Yeah man, Sasha, or Stephen (draggone)…I wish I didn’t live in a townhouse, they dont even let me change the oil in the parking space we pay for monthly… I’m new to working on cars, I do a lot of research, I’m really dedicated to cars. I have to end up taking it to people to install basic things cuz I can’t do them here. Oh well, I’ll try to go to a co-op meeting and try to get something arranged, I’m tired of this shit and not knowing how badly someone fucked up my car, and then being ripped off and no one taking responsibility.

So much for the dream of owning a nice old sporty car as a daily driver and tracking it occasionally. Everyone on SON has buddies that come over and help out when beer & pizza is provided. I’m SO willing to do that. I should start going to the Kennedy Commons meets on tuesday nights and try to make some friends that can help me work on the car or just for general advice. It’s really nice to have a group of people with very similar goals as yourself. Nice moral support, that’s why I’m on SON all the time. I try to provide advice on diagnosis posts in the tech section to the best of my knowledge.

damn dude, sounds just like how i was when i got my first 240 and got ripped by someone. Sounds like its a shit load of things all wrong, judging from what you wrote about the engine that got swapped in, and the manner of the install and labor, I would think your car needs some serious work. damn!

I tried the wire test, cyl #3 seems to be the culprit. It’s running on 3 cylinders pretty much. I tried another wire, its definetely not the wire. I will take out the plug tomorrow and inspect it, I can’t find my spark plug extension for the ratchet. I have a new dizzy rotor and cap, but there’s a missing bolt, so the distributor cap can be moved side to side. I’ll fix that ASAP.

There is a charging problem clearly, and when my battery was connected to a friend’s started car, none of the cluster lights were on.

75A alternator fuse seems good also.

honestly man…I’d swap that motor and tranny out and re-install it again with yourself and friends or get a better condition KA.

Do it this summer, you’ll learn lots more and you can make sure that it’s done right this time!

I would never to this point drive my car knowing some retarded idiot with no brain and iq fucked up my swap, get er’ done right and save yourself future headaches…
