I was rolling along, everything going fine. I heard my air pump slowing down as I was coasting and went to hit the gas to speed it up and I had nothing. The motor had quit without making a sound. Now, I pull over on the side of the street (in the ghetto no less) and it won’t do anything. Battery is good and connected (I have lights, doors, valves, etc) just NOTHING for ignition. I checked all of the fuses in the dash and all were OK. I checked the ground for the fuel pump and the ground on the chassis near the battery. WHAT COULD THIS BE?! I’m hoping for some suggestions I can check on the side of the road until my buddy can come tow it at 5. ANYONE?!
my truck just died one day like you said and it was the module/computer.
I doubt it is that.
can you jump the starter switch with a screwdriver or somrthing to make sure it’s getting voltage at the starter? Sounds like a wire came off or something simple like that. good luck
I assume it’s something electrical. It was rather sudden and silent to be something this bad and be mechanical. I can spin the alternator pulley so it’s no seized (had that happen before). I can’t reach the starter without a jack, so I am heading over there now to check again. I am freakin out, I don’t want it sittin there. I took the rest of the day off work.
humm… starter getting juice when cranking? do those run ECM ignition modules? sounds like power issue to the ignition controller… whatever that may be on a GM!
my uncle had the same problem a few months back in his blazer. 77rednecktruck posted a link about some kind of ignition module. it was about 60 bucks at autozone. fixed the problem.
his problem seemed to be speratic it first. if you go down and try it today it might fire right up.
yeah, my Blazer had ignition module problems. This one is not the same as my Blazer as it doesn’t have a distributor cap in the classic sense. It’s like a rectangular box with the spark plug wires in it
probably mean the ignition control module under the distributor cap and rotor. depending on year its a 5 or 7 pin module I do believe. In GMs they tend to just burn out, problem usually starts with hard to or no start condition and then one day it will just die out.
Yeah, I know about those ones. The one in this one (96) is not the same. There is no ‘distributor cap’ like in the older motors. I’ll see what my chiltons book says about ignition problems.
Thanks guys

I got it home. I will start inspecting it more in depth this weekend. I am just glad to get it home, and didn’t even scrap on my buddy’s flatbed… could be worse.
still F’n low. Plus with no motor, I got no air. My tank was only about 110psi when it crapped out. Plus it had to sit for 4 hours with a few small leaks. I expected it to scrape.
Thats less than a year old… well, maybe a little more but its relatively new. When it went before I was still able to get the starter to turn and it threw an SES code. I have neither at the moment. I can’t remember if it’s the W or X… 90% sure its the W but I wi;; have to double check.
Nope, don’t have the cash for the regulator so I decided to put it off till spring. It would have been ideal in this situation though… oh well, thats how shit always goes. If I had bought it, i would of never needed it.
