Vehicle Inspection: Roll Cages?

Whats the rules on putting in roll cages for a vehicle that gonna be driven on the street and needing to be inspected? I would have thought they would be a no no because they take away a lil bit of the collaspe zones on cars for accidents by reinforcing the chassis?

can somebody find or link me the regulations?

Im a state inspector… As long as the cage doesnt prevent exit of the drivers door, you have proper restraints for the driver then i cant see why it would be a problem… Theres nothing in the book about roll cages thou. In a state inspection you only have to have a working seat belt for the driver and all doors, hood and trunk must be able to open and close. Maybe if the guy that inspected the car was a huge ass hole he might not pass it but I dont see it as a prolblem. Bring it down to me if no one else will pass it.

one more question. When I build my roll cage my design might not allow my rear seats to go back in. The rear seats are removed now. Will I have to put the rear seats and safety belts back in to pass inspection?

i belive, not sure, that u can take em out, but u might have to have seat bealts there…im not sure…

bro says to pass inspectino, u MUST have a driver seat, with working seat belts…if u dont have any other seats…u dont need those seat bealts…and it will pass

The above response is 100% accurate from turboTSI1320. I have put my road race car through PA state inspection 3 times and I know the ins-and-outs quite well.

Rear seats are not required. And if you don’t have rear seats, you don’t need the belts either.

If you are designing the cage yourself, remember that since you will be driving it on the street and without a helmet, you need to consider where the cage is with reference to your head. A guy I know had an accident in his caged Camaro and wasn’t wearing a helmet. The accident didn’t bang him up too bad but the “give” in the seat belt (when compared to a 5-pt or 6-pt harness) allowed his head to impact the cage. His g/f took pictures before he got the stitches and you could actually see his skull. Looked very painful.

Yea you have to use the oem seatbelt also.

The only seat that matters is the drivers seat and the drivers belt. you dont need any others or any other belts.

what do short ugly german guys have to do with state inspections

Fair point. I work with an Austrian guy named Helmut and it’s become natural to type it that way since I’m always sending him e-mails…

As far as seat belts are concerned, this seems to be a gray area. There is nothing that I can see in the State Inspection Procedures Manual (I bought a copy a few years back) that mandates the stock belts, but you do need a driver’s restraint system. However, I have been told that if a policeman pulls you over and you only have a 5-pt or 6-pt system without a stock-style setup, you could get a ticket. I have no idea if this is accurate or why this is the case. I CAN say that I’ve passed 3 legitimate state inspections and got away without a ticket after a talkin’ too by a Cecil Policeman with just a 6-point harness in the car. Some guys put in a harness and retain the stock belts in PA for this situation.

 just bustin ya

what about harnesses. does it matter what sizes they are 2 inch or 3 inch do they have to pass sfi 16.1 inspection or no just dot approved?

The car has to have factory mounting seat belts( so it says) but I dont think anyone really looks into that. When cars are inspected the inspector only looks for things that eather are totally not safe or something that needs replaced that will make them money (brakes, rotors, tires ect) There not going to give a shit about a harrness or a roll cage.
