Very stupid qeston but i gotta ask its bugging me..

Whats the SX in 240SX stand for? okay now you can laugh at my stupid question lol

I don’t think it means anything.

It’s part of the name so it’s just the name.

The only meaning on the name is the SE or LE which are SPECIAL or
SPORTS EDITION and LE is either LUXURY or LIMITED EDITION

Yea i know those 2…jsut thoguht it might have a meaning…i guess not lol …then i guess 350Z means nothing and 300ZX too

All kinds of discussion on that here:

Would be interesting to find out the real answer…

Scal is Xtra gay

i remember reading it ment turbo in japan but here it was carried over as a gimmick of sorts

…maybe just to differentiate models?

does the M in 300M and the C in 300C mean anything???

S in SX is definitely for the chassis (S13, S14, etc…) just like Z in ZX was for Z31, Z32, etc…

but I’m not sure what the X stood for…

but what about the 200sx’s? although they used to be running an s chassis, now they’re running with a b if i remember correctly, so why are they still sporting the sx tag? (i still agree with you tho lith, seems reasonable)

yeah, the 200sx we got here was basically a two door sentra… but the 200sx everywhere else was still a S13 or S14… I think it was just more convient at the time to call it a 200sx eventhough it was still a b-chassis…
Nissan’s naming scheme is a bit flawed I think… but I think it was all about marketing…
The sentra coupe probably sold better by having the 200sx name tag instead of “Sentra”, cuz most people would have (somehow) related it to the 240sx. The 240 was pretty damn expensive back then and the 200sx was quite a bit cheaper…

By the way, the 200sx also came in SE-R trim, but I don’t think we got that one here… the 1995 200sx SE-R was about $16,000USD and a 1995 240sx LE version was about $21,000USD

So you can see the huge price difference b/w the 200sx and the 240sx. So I guess most people would have picked the 200sx since it’s cheaper, but I don’t think they would have realized that those 2 cars are from completely different families hehe…

Well anyways, that’s my guess as to why Nissan named the Sentra coupe a 200sx (it’s more sporty… just like the 240sx, but a lot cheaper)…

The C in 300C means it has the 5.7 hemi vs the regular engine.
And I’m pretty sure the X in SX is just to be cool.

The 200sx jelly bean is not really a 200sx in name like the S13. The 200sx Sentra is still a Sentra, the 200sx is just a package.

Like the NX1600 (the 1.6L version)

I think they just did it to have some kind of association with the 240sx like Lith said. People that wanted to feel like they were buying something sporty like the 240 but for cheaper.

It still confuses me why Nissans (and other cars) in Japan came with English names, yet when they exported them, they went to a letter/number. Guess it was to seem more European?

The X was a big Nissan thing in like '83. They were thowing it on everything they could.

They re-introduced the 280Z as ZX, the S12 Silvia and DR30 came with RS-X designation in top trim. Before that, RS was the top, like the 240RS (S110)

Why they didn’t call the turbo 200sx’s S12s, 180sx’s (1.8 for turbo, 2.0 for NA) I dunno.

Just wish car companies would not reuse names on different platforms, it gets confusing.
