Victorsmalls' 04 Grand Prix

dont waste your time on a HD swap before the built one. run yours, break it, and upgrade.

its only a bandaid if you dont do it right the first time. come see my garage, i have like (3) 302 blocks sitting around.

I hear ya on that. I am thinking about going with a Triple Edge Performance build… heard good things and the price isn’t too steep.

yeah. its just a good thing i can keep finding stock shortblocks for under $100. Jeff was giving me shit the other day that my oil changes consist of swapping motors.

What’s that like $80 or $90 worth?

Going scrap price :dunno:

ha, the last one i bought was $60. intake to pan

don’t waste your money on an HD swap. unless you like to do massive 1 wheel peels then save it. you’ll ruin either HD or non-HD buy doing 1 wheel

your gonna break your chain or your input shaft first. it won’t likely be on the launch unless you have slicks or DRs. with street tires if you can blow them(or even chirp them) on the 1-2 then you have enough shock to break the input

go triple edge. I’m doing my own trans but and plan on getting many parts from dave, he really knows his shit

Thanks for the heads up on Dave. I have heard so many great things about him as well.

I plan to take easy and “lift before shift” until a built trans is in the car. N/A with all the bolt ons it will chirp going into second WOT, so I have really better be careful with it is turbo.

Be a man stay in it :kekegay:

Looking good dave

Installed the AEM wideband and ran all the wiring. I am now out of parts and wanting for ZZP.

Are you planning on running the PCM ZZP ships you without any changes? Not sure if “Custom tune by ZZP” meant you’re driving out there for dyno/tuning time, or if you’re going to run a shipped PCM.

Relaying my recent experience- I had major issues with the PCM ZZP sent me with my SS M90 kit for my Monte Carlo- the MAF was scaled really, really rich and the car would barely hold idle. PE was tuned pretty rich too, and I had a decent amount of smoke out of the tailpipes when WOT.

I totally understand why they ship it that way (hard to detonate/blow your motor when you’re that rich), but a little tweaking with HP Tuners went a LONG way with how the car drives. They’re turbo kit PCM’s might be dialed in better. Does Ed or someone else up your way have a tuner? It’s probably worth having one on standbye in case you have any PCM-related startup issues after the install. I will say that the ZZP 1.0 I ran in my Regal for a good while was amazingly close to being dialed in for a canned tune.

I will be running the tune ZZP puts together for me for the new Maf and everything else added. Hopes are that it will run well with the tune they give me. I am not sure if Ed has a tuner, but I know ZZP dyno tuned his current setup. After getting everything up an running I will be looking for a dyno tune come spring.

Cool. Since it’s not your daily driver I’m sure you’ll be fine until you get some dyno time. If you do need a tuner for some sort of emergency sitaution I know a few of us have them on here (myself included).

That sounds great. I appreciate you giving me the option.

yeah i had a problem with my canned tune too. things really shaped up when i got the laptop in hand and the wideband going

lift before shift has been working for me

That is great news. I know yours has been charged and cammed for sometime now. Do you baby it out of the hole as well? I can’t imagine it will hook on street tires anyways.

I figure the wideband will give me a pretty good idea how good the tune they send me is for the setup. :dunno:

no traction and it seems to be slipping a little bit so it gets pretty light throttle through 1st. 2nd still holds good though, i was playing around last week (it was wet) and burning the tires on the 3-2 at 50mph just to see if it could still do it

even driving around normally i find myself unconsciously letting up on the 1-2, if you have good clutches and good pressure that shift is going to be the biggest shock on your hard parts. i bet with a turbo you could blow tires in 2nd with no shift lol

Did you leave any torque management in at shifts? I’ve got the stock 5-7% torque reduction in place still at my shifts (on the SS, the Regal’s torque management is all zero’d)- in case I forget to lift. Gives me some piece of mind, too. I really like the way the SS shifts- I increased line pressure and decreased shift time but left torque management in place and kept the shift points reasonable (~5700).

Victor, does your car have a “performance shift” button? I’m wondering what ZZP’s canned tune will look like transmission wise.

The 04+ doesn’t have a performance shift button so ZZP makes it performance shift all the time. With the roller rockers in the car the shift points will be at 6200. That is all I know for sure.

as far as i know 01+ has no performance shift.
