I’d take spam’s advice over most.
I was working at an independent shop at the time picking up parts, not at the dealership. the S60R is a cool car for sure, I think they put a little extra care into those than the average XC70 it seems.
I still laugh everytime I see the title of this thread. The S60R I drove felt like it had 200hp not 300hp and the dealer who had mostly Volvos on his lot talked about how fast it was. LMAO.
Why? Does the car need to be fast to have enthusiasts?
I drive a Civic Hx and stock Crx, so that would be an improvement, but that’s not my focal point of what I’m looking for.
I’m not looking at it as a "fast"project car/weekend car/standpoint, ppl are getting hung up on that.
Looking for something with a bit more room, practical, reliable, good in snow, possibly with a little pep, just for kicks.
No I didn’t mean that, it just seems most Volvo drivers don’t give a rats ass about their car. There are always exceptions though… I guess.
I test drove a 2006 or 2007 V70R and was seriously considering it for my wife. I wanted her to get a wagon and couldn’t find a e39 wagon that wasn’t beat or had 200k on it. After looking into V70R parts costs I was scared away. The Haldex AWD system is FWD biased (tdown), and the transfer case has many reported issues of failure, along with this particular years automatic transmission. Rear suspension bushing issues were reported quite a bit too. The thing that scared me the most was replacement costs for the Ohlins suspension. I could maybe justify getting a car like this if I drove it and dealt with all of its quirks, but not for my wife and kids.
She ended up really liking the XC90. I hated the idea of a SUV. We test drove a FWD (no snow in Phoenix) 3.2L and ended up liking it. Its not that great on gas, 18MPG mixed city/highway, but its safe. Front and rear airbags for the kids also.
The only Volvo wagon I would really own is the P1800ES.
Found one here in Phoenix a couple of months ago. I don’t really need anymore cars at the moment though.
God, I love the P1800 wagons…
This.
I wanted to like the S60R, until I drove it and realized how much of a turd it was. Its a car that’s cherished by people… that usually haven’t owned one. The people that are daft enough to buy one, usually defend it like its the pinnacle of automotive excellence and they are the only ones who have cracked this code. Its not all that great at anything, other than being unique, which it is. I think its a good looking car (with some questionable interior elements) but the overall experience is underwhelming.
That said, if you aren’t pretending its an M3, they are solid, safe and reasonably reliable cars.
The S60R was seriously one of my favorite cars. I couldn’t wait to be able to buy one after I purchase my Corvette. I went and test drove a used one and couldn’t believe how sloppy it felt. Soft suspension, shifting, slow… so bad I actually thought maybe it was just that one that I had test drove. I actually went to another dealer and test drove another one. Same thing! I was seriously heart broken. I’ve been in a couple 850s that BLOW the S60R out of the water.
I guess if you drive some actual performance cars the S60R feels like a lowered Silverado with a nicer interior.
I don’t want to come off as spiteful but I hate that Volvo played with my heart and dumped me on the side of the road like that! lol
I so badly wish the C30 was available in AWD. Has anyone on here drove one? do you like it? is it fast?
Continue to post up sexy Volvo pics…
Nice s60.
Mind sharing what you paid for it at the time?
Update:
Leaning towards looking at V70’s, late 90’s -early 2k’s. Also maybe interested in 850 sedan models.
They both seem to be what I’m looking for as far as practicality, mileage and room.
I’ve seen a few Volvo forums, but looking for anyone with experience with these cars and the forums, regarding which forums are most informative and active.
Volvoforums.com (doesn’t seem to be very active)
volvoforum.com
turbobrick.com (seem to deal with pre -95, old 240 models)
sweedspeed.com
volvospeed.com
i have a 99 V70R 99K ill be selling for $7500 soon
Pm me for details
How soon?
Has me interested enough to hear about it.
Shoot me a PM with some pics and details.
The two door will soon be an inconveinance, so I’m back on this Volvo wagon kick.
Anyone have any experience with the 1st gen V70’s.
Common issues, what to look for, any quirks?
Seriously considering one of these for the 4 doors and cargo space for everyday tasks, once the kitchen remodel is done, student loans and car loan paid off.
theres also torquecars.com and matthewsvolvosite.com
