They are electrical nightmares. They even have a problem of leaking coolant out of the tail lights. My father was a service manager for 35+ years before he retired. He worked for just about every manufacturer but most of his time was with Chrysler and then VW. He said that the problems he saw with VW were unbelievable. He has billed VW over 30k for warranty work on individual cars several times. Unless you like spending money on repairs stay away from VW.
my wife has a 95 golf with 150k and the thing is on its way to the junk yard becuase its frame is rusting through.the motor is leaking oil like crazy. It has gone through all wheel bearings and tie rods.STAY AWAY FROM VW.You had a boosted s2k and it was probably more reliable than a vw
if you are trying to pic honda or vw go with the honda … worked for vw 7 years… get the honda you will be happy in the long run…
I have had my vw for at least 3 weeks with no issues. I don’t know what everyone else on here is talking about…
lol@ 3 weeks!
new sig material
This quickly deteriorated into a vw hate thread. Good job everyone.

I am pretty sure all Jetta’s are built in Mexico. If that is the case then stay away, far far away. As for the civic dash, my wife just got an LX sedan and you get used to that dash really quickly. It is actually really practical how it is laid out.
It all comes down to maintenance. I’ve owned several VAG products over the years and have never had any major issues. Yes, wheel bearings seem to be a common problem but that’s the only real issue I’ve ever had.
I bought a Maxima over a year ago from West Herr. I loved it so much I traded it in after owning it for 4 months for another Audi… I guess it really comes down to what you are use too. I even owned a Civic way back in the day and I had more issues with that car than any other car I’ve ever owned. Does that make all Hondas POS? No, I just ended up with a bad experience.
I love how all the VW haters come out bashing VW’s because they once owned one with XXX.XXX miles that where POS when they bought them…
Did he work for Schitts Garage?
I have an 07 jetta 2.5. it has been great. about 17k on it. The only problem so far was the airbag sensor in one of the seats went bad, covered by the dealer. It is an auto with trac control (ESP) and it sucks in the snow unless you turn off the trac control. We are also gonna try snow tires on it next winter! The only other thing we have done to it is oil changes.
All i know if the 2.5 engine is bad on fuel.
i love my 05 civic. everything is so well layed out. just wish i could of had leather interior
my brother has a 95 Jetta GL 5speed closing in on 200k… clutch and t-belt after it snapped and general mait, never had a problem,
my 01 jetta 1.9t stock wheel bearings/turbo/motor/axles/control arms/starter/alternator/ A/C parts/ heater parts/ window motors/ect… and 290k maybe im lucky???
I am not sure about the 2.5’s not out long enough to determine reliability…
The Wolfsburg is only available in a 2.0L
Correct!!! It’s a shame they have it labeled as a Wolfsburg Edition, when the car is not even built in the Wolfsburg factory.
I owned a 97 vr6 jetta for a year, never left me stranded.1 wheel bearing, thermostat and the starter wire rotted off…freebie fix though. It had 140K+ Miles on it,I’d definitely pick another up if the price was right and it was maintained.
That’s the thing though, after the warranty is up most people are slackers and only change the oil.
Less fast + less violent combustion = less heat, less stress, less wear, everything lasts longer. And you’re really grasping at straws with the brakes thing. The TDi I had needed brake work because it jumped a massive series of pot holes (craters) in the boonies and the brakes were depressed at the time (sigh), but besides that AFAIK everyone else just needed basic pads and rotors once or twice in their quarter million miles.
Maybe if you buy a piece of shit VW it’ll remain a piece of shit and ruin your image of them and make you argue against a car you’ve never driven or owned on a car forum against someone who’s been around turbo diesel VWs for ten years, who knows.
I guess the transmission usually goes before the engine itself can. I know of a few grand ams and I owned a lumina that was driven till the motor itself was unusuable (165,000). Can’t remember what the mechanic said was wrong so I can’t really use it as an example
Only a rotary guy would argue that vw’s as a whole are reliable
“the only VW worth getting is a diesel VW”
Here we go again.
:picard:
The tdi is a decent diesel motor…The chassis it is in (mk4) IMO is fucking garbage. I would not even wish it upon anyone.
The 2.0t seems to be hit and miss.
The cam driven fuel sometimes destroys itself and the top end with it.
Also some have been eating a quart every 1000 miles.
My a4 (05.5 2.0t) has been flashed since ~25,000 I have 56,xxx and the only issues I have had was and airbag light that came on (repaired under TSB)and two fucking coilpacks that blew up randomly…
Those have been revised and are not supposed to break out of fucking now where anymore…
My sister has a wolfsburg jetta. She likes it. I haven’t heard from her that she’s had any issues with it so far.
However, my dad had a Toureg that threw a timing chain over the summer. The dealership told him the car would never need the timing chain replaced(pretty standard). They must have jinxed him or something when they told him not to have it done.
